Hi all, I have a laptop which the HDD has just died. The laptop doesn't need to be extremely portable so I've decided to put a normal HDD on there. Does anyone know where i might find a wiring diagram or some information on doing this conversion? Thanks! ZeffriN
A normal HD wouldnt fit into the hard drive enclosure of laptop ? So are you planning to have the hard drive outide the laptop ? like in another case or something ?
well, i suppose you could use one of these converter box thingies, only the other way around... (maybe) but the cable might be the wrong way round or something

Those converter don't work both way's exactly. I am building a car MP3 player out of a old laptop. The IDE pinout is the same, and I use the convertor, but the connecters are sometimes flipped. I had to make an IDE cable with every other pin flipped. (Every two wires, flipped) for example: NORMAL IDE: 1---1 2---2 3---3 4---4 5---5 6---6 Laptop to IDE 2---2 1---1 4---4 3---3 5---5 6---6 It's hard to discribe, and I will have a guide once the project is done. In the end just make sure that each pin is connected correctly (I fried a laptop doing it just by trying to experiment) This laptop (more expensive) I use a continuity meter and checked each and every pin. i could be wrong but dont notebook hdd's run on 5 volts and a normal pc one on 12 volts but i could be wrong like i said before ?? Yammosk

I think you're right, but we're just going to run the HDD in parrallel from the power supply. Im pretty sure a PC HDD pulls more current than a notebook hdd, so we don't want to **** up the notebook. Will keep you all posted... (let you know if I toast my friends notebook)
