so i've been stuck in a shooter rut, and need something different. i guess i'm not really looking for other game types that are combat oriented either like most rpg. what i'd really like is stuff like myst and fahrenheit. but they don't seem to make these types of games much with any amount of quality for pc anymore. at least as far as i can tell by the few i tried in the last years. well anyway, recommendations?
Steal someones PS3 and play heavy rain haha, that was a great game, glad it came out before I sold mine... Maybe try a genre that you haven't played for ages, something like CIV, Company of heroes etc. One of the best games I've found this year (besides P2) is Richard Burns Rally, cost £3 off play.com and its constantly updated by fans! Its the best Rally Sim I've ever played (http://www.virtualr.net/?s=RSRBR)
I guess you could try STALKER, but it is part shooter. It is one big adventure as well though, so you might enjoy. Get Call of Pripyat as it is the best one in the series.
Assassin's Creed 2, then Brotherhood, and then join us in multiplayer it's heart pounding and really really great fun trying to get that incognito poison kill while being chased by 3 other players.
Perhaps try something like Dawn of War 2: The Last Stand - Standalone. Or DoW2 in general. Some nice RPG elements in it and essentially 3 gamestyles. The campaign is very RPG/RTS, the multi is unforgiving RTS and the Last Stand part is good RPG co-op. Even though the waves of enemies are the same, it never gets old. Alternatively, on the shooter side of things... I'm of the same opinion that things have been stagnating alot recently. I'm itching for the release of Brink though. I genuinely believe it could breath alot of fresh air into the genre.
i think i'll pass on richard burns rally, it sounds like its one of the ultra realistic ones. i might give the new civ a shot. i've already played stalker games, but those are fps / rpg hybrid. real fps? i'm not looking to play shooters... i don't remember liking the first assassin's creed much. are the sequels better? dow 2 looks ok, i'll give the demo a try.
If you want a seriously hefty RTS; Supreme Commander / Forged Alliance / maybe Supreme Commander 2 Sins of a Solar Empire Nexus: The Jupiter Incident
A lot better. Assassin's Creed 2 was a huge step up from AC1 in my mind. Brotherhood is a smaller step up, although I don't believe it's as good as Assassin's Creed 2. Anyway why is everyone suggesting games that require combat orientated games, when the OP stated he didn't want those suggestions? I'm with you though, adventure games just aren't the same since the days of MYST.
lol. i see. REAL fps. i don't know about serious rts. i haven't played many of that type of game. myth ages ago, and more recently c&c red alert 3 and thats probably about it. yeah i really wish there were more games oriented to 'older' gamers, who like to think and solve puzzles and stuff like the old adventure games. the new adventure games all seemed to be half a$sed point and click crap with illogical 'puzzles'. nikopol was the least worst of my recent adventure game experiences, but still had too many wtf puzzles.
Have you tried Portal 1+2 yet? It's a nice break from the mindless killing of most FPSs. I'll agree with NaloaC on trying Supreme Commander. Stretch your long term thinking!
i've played portal and some mods several times. just waiting for 2 to drop in price a bit. supreme commander also has a demo, so i'll give that a go.
Supreme Commander Gold Edition has been going for peanuts for ages now, really does tax your brain. Make sure you have a half decent rig though, very CPU intensive game.
Core Maximiser is a useful thing to install if you have a proper multi-core CPU. Spreads the load out a hell of alot better. SupCom may be a violent enough game, but they're all mechs and the genuine use of strategy and not tactics makes for a nice change in RTS. None of this small scale stuff!
