I am working with Indigenous communities and am trying to have households webcam each other on dial-up speeds. I have heard of and am trying Skype, IVisit and Microsoft Portrait but cannot get them to work. We have had the most success with Skype, but it does like to have 256mbs upload. We really need something that will transmit b/w images and at a slower frame rate (like Microsoft portrait) to operate effectively on very slow speeds. Another issue is heavy downloads with webcams in colour and for isolated communities with satellite connections only, the costs can be formidable. Does anyone know of any other software solutions or alternatives?

You need something like Palktalk. I've been using it for years. Works great even over dialup.
