MTG cannot be compared to chess since anyone can play chess, and to play MTG you have to waste a lot of money, MTG isn't really a fair game, chess it is. As to control, I used to play LLL (Legion Land Lost), a green deck, how to control with a green deck? Destroying your oponent's lands. I played that in Extended.
I played for a 3-4 years and stopped after 6th edition. Having to buy crap laods of cards simply because 6th edition blacklisted so many of my more powerful older cards really pissed me off. At one point I had about half a bozen shoe boxes of cards, down to about 1 box of cards left, keep pawning them off on people.
Hi Yeah I agree that its a bit of a money business. And you do need to spend alot of money to get the quality cards. and its indeed stupid that they make cards, that they later on going to ban... But me and my friends play mostly with preconstructed decks. And we and some cool cards later on.. we just buy some booster packs now and then... I bought a few to start off... but that should be all for quite a while. L
well, true, all you need to play chess is a board and chess pieces. but that's not the comparison i was making. if you look back at all the winning decks in MTG's pro-tour history, you'll see how much though and strategy goes into the deck construction. every card has a purpose, a reason to be there. whenever i built a deck, i always used cards that i liked, or cards that had nice pictures (because, if you'll remember, i preferred to play for fun). but the pro guys take the game very seriously and choose every single card in their decks for a specific reason. after all, when you are competing for that kind of money, you have to have a solid deck that can handle every other kind of deck, from fast creture to uber-destruction to control. your one deck has to handle them all. then you take into account the different combinations that these guys come up with. many of them aren't exactly simple. when you're in the final match of a game worth $100,000, you have to try to read your opponent's mind and plan your card play accordingly. in the end, i owuld probably agree that chess is still on a higher "thinking threshhold" than MTG, but on the pro level the similarities are there. -monkey
One more thing, in chess all the peices are visible, what isn't visible is what your oponent has in his mind. In MTG you don't know what your oponent has in his hand, what's his next card, what's your next card and what does he have in his mind.
woah i played magic around 10 yeard ago and still have a few thousand cards ive been told theyre worth a fortune lots of alpha and beta edition cards, arabian knights and antiquities and all of the other ealy expansion sets (anyone fancy dropping a few grand on cards? i hear that beta edition mox gems fetch a fair bit ) i really enjoyed playing but quit because there wasnt many people to play with (or people that had a decent deck) is there a magic game for the pc these days? just the cards not the RTS ones, i have on but it doesnt like XP
well, i wouldn't go so far as to say a fortune. maybe more like a handsome amount actually, you might have trouble unloading most of the older cards (alpha, beta, unlimited, and the first few expansions). since the alpha set had more rounded corners, they are totally banned, so the only people really interested in them are collectors, but then this may actually work to your advantage! i'm not 100% certain as to the current rules, but i believe the rest of the cards would have to have the same card in a later version in order to play with it (depending on the format and card). of course, that's only for strict tournament play. for friends around the house, load up your deck with all the banned beta cards you can get. i use to always use beta versions of any cards i had for my decks, mostly because they are prettier. when revised was issued Wizards and Carta Mundi used a new ink, so the cards all had a "lighter" look to them, unlike the older sets with the nice bold look to them. i'm not sure, but i think they went back to the old ink sometime later, because i remember the cards got better looking as the game progressed. -monkey
not many alpha as i started realy collecting when beta some out have lots of beta, unlimited, revised and 4th edition alpha are not legal in tournaments though i know for sure, they were even disallowed circa revised edition sort of time iirc i know what you mean about revised, they look like they have been sitting in the sun for a few weeks compared to unlimited/beta/alpha, but it looks like 4th edition ones are bolder then revised
Mister Tad, I may be able to take some of those cards off your hands. I was an avid player from revised through ice age, then I quit for a while. I started up again when Darksteel came out and I'm enjoying getting back into it. I played in the vintage tournament at the world championships last month, but didn't do so well. If you're serious about getting rid of some of those cards Mister Tad, pm me... BTW, @ supermonkey: They don't let Drew Tucker deposit his excrement on cards anymore Anyone who plays magic should check out www.mtgplay.com Download the software and the card patches. It's like owning all the cards ever printed without having to spend a dime!
I haven't downloaded that soft yet, but like 3 years ago there was a game called Apprentice that let you play with other players via internet. The cards didn't have the drawings, but that didn't matter.
yeah, i was half-expecting a response like that sooner or later. i think i'm the only person that ever liked Drew Tucker's work. watercolor has always been my favorite medium to work in, and i really like his loose style. a lot of his work outside MTG was really nice. -monkey
[geek moment]hehehe i was waiting for this thread to come up,i play it regulary at least once a week. The New kamigawa edition is the best with the legendary creatures and amazing arcane spells which you can splice into each other you can really kick some ass then! I have some decks of each colours and then new white kamigawa deck is soo good their main creatures are samurai and alone they are weak but together they can bring each other up to 14/14 + then its gets really messy,i have also an artifact based blue manipulating deck which whenever someone plays a card they have to discard it! Some do say its not good if it gets complicatred,i think the opposite the whole point of the game is to beat the oponent by outwitting them with a highly complicated sequence of moves with specific cards thats what really make the fun a real strategy game! [/geek moment]
Yeah, it is all about that, but there is a limit. I could come up with some expensive cards, and make some kind of combo (wich I would have never thought of myself... I just read it somewhere)... and thats kinda defeats the whole point of the game. lol but I understand your angle. I have the new white aswell ! its indeed quite good. I also have the green and red. the green has a powerfull legendary combo aswell, but I find it hard to work with it properly, it will take some training. Red is usually the theme deck you get along with fast, and enjoy playing. And this is againt he case with the new series. I agree that the new kamigawa series is a good one, the legendary creatures, the hero's, etc... but one thing i find dissapointing about hte last few series, and that is the artifacts, some are fantastic... but some I just find very expensive... the equiping cost etc... a easy enchantment is much easier and cheaper, but the artifacts are more versile... but yeah, the new series kick ass. I enforced my white deck already, its even better now L
my red one wins in 5 turns on 3 mana blue one is mainly artifact based but still good, dont you think the 5th dawn edition was really crap?
