Im trying to find info online that shows/proves 64bit CPU's ARE faster than 32bit CPU's. I know they are cause I just switched, but im trying to prove my point to some morons, and I cant locate good sources. I have seen this info in several places in the past, but I cant remember where I saw it.....
I know someone like that even when I provide him with a viable link prooving he is wrong about whatever he still thinks hes right
if you're referring to AMD CPUs, more specifically AthonXP vs Athlon64, the speed difference has little to do with the fact that one of them is capable of running 64bit code. Technically speaking, an A64 is a 32bit cpu with 64bit extensions rather than a true 64bit CPU They are completely different architectures, the A64 being a great deal quicker due to that. Just like comparing a PM cpu with a Dothan core and a P4 with a Prescott core, the Dothan is much faster clock for clock simply due to a better architecture, regardless of it being 32bit or not. Most applications are still 32bit, so the advantages of a 64bit cpu are few and far between. This does not, however, mean that there are no advantages to an A64, as that executes 32bit code particularly well as well. A More direct comparison for 32bit vs 64bit would be with a few models of P4s which share all of the same specifications except for 64bit extensions, for instance a 540 and 540J, which are both 3.4Hz Prescott cores, but the J has 64bit extensions. There is very little difference in the way of performance. Technically speaking, the morons are kind of right
it actually all depends on your deffinition of "Faster" really... didn't some crazy guys from sweden OC a 32bit P4 to around 6 ghz or so? and they ran std about 3.2 ghz. so clock speeds. Oh wait. I see intel has a 3.8 ghz lga775 with 64bit support. ah well. go go new technology.
