    Top one's the puppy.

    Look out for a modem with routers built in, they're pretty common and then it'd be...

    modem & router
    |
    |
    Switch
    |
    |
    PC

    And some of these modem/routers have 4 ports (built in switch too) which might help...

    Modem/Router/Switch

    |
    PC

    Yup, as has been said the top one is key. You may not find a modem/router/switch, cause they are some what more expensive, but atleast try to get a router with builtin switch.

    I actually like the modem and the router/switch to be separate... But that's just personal preference...

    Plus it is cheaper to replace if something goes wrong, and easier to determine what is the problem.

    If you're on Cable it'll be:

    Modem -> Router/Switch --> PC

    I've yet to see a cable Router which does not have a switch

    And if you are a WISP, it goes: Wireless Receiver -> Router/Switch -> PCs. (Not that you would have a WISP unless you live out in nowhere.)
