As the title says, I just built a new system and the performance is actually worse than the machine it replaced. Old Machine: P4 2.6C Abit IC7-G 9800pro 128MB 1GB Corsair XMS PC3200 (256X4) WD 74 Gig Raptor New Machine: A64 3000+ Venice Asus A8N SLI Deluxe 6800 GT 256MB 1GB Corasair XMS PC3200 (256X4 from old machine ^) WD 74 Gig Raptor (from old machine ^) Now the game I am playing is World of Warcraft. On my old machine it would take about 5-10 seconds from when I entered the game to when i could actually start walking around. This was due to the game loading information into RAM. (upgrading to a gig from 512 confirmed this.) With the new A64 system this lag time has at least doubled. Furthermore, I get random lag in highly populated areas where the game will stall for 3-5 seconds. This never used to happen with my P4 system. Now I know that the A64 and 6800GT are far more powerful than my old rig so what is the deal? No other software is installed and I have the latest chipset and video drivers. I've tried reformatting twice now and the lag has not changed. Any ideas?
I'll give that a shot today. For some reason I keep thinking it's RAM related though. I checked the performance tab in the windows task manager in 2 states: while running warcraft and while not running warcraft. With warcraft running it shows 800MB of RAM being used and 400 MB of paging file in use. When no programs are running it shows 200MB of RAM usage and 150MB of paging file. It really makes it look like I'm running out of RAM and the lag is caused by my computer accessing the paging file. What just doesn't make sense though is that 1 gig was enough for my P4 to run the game smoothly...
Could do with 2x512 (or 2x1gig) rather than 4x256, make the system a bit quicker. What coolers are you using on your GPU and CPU? Have you tried older gfx and mobo chipset drivers? Could be anything, but I would check all the bios settings are correct and temperatures are reasonable. Motherboard Monitor 5 is a good all round temperature monitor. Speed Fan is a good alternative if you cant get MB5 to work with your board (you should be able to tho) Everest is more in depth and inludes temps, voltages, diagnostics, benchmarking and sytem info CPUZ is a small but useful program that tells you basic system info. Note down temps at idle before running the game then agian after running it for an hour or so. Does this happen in any other games? Even if youve managed to sort the problem I would recomend downloading all the above tools and give them a go, always very useful to have Sounds stupid but have you checked the gfx card has the additional power to it? the 12v adapter, ive forgotten to connect it many times before after rebuilding my system Edit:\ sounds a bit odd but what happens when you run 2x256 in dual channel slots? any difference other than it being slower..
Yes, it was a clean install on a freshly formatted drive. I'll try 2X256 in dual channel when I get home. I do remember hearing something about ASUS boards and problems using all 4 RAM slots.
Have you tried any other games or apps other than WoW? Are you getting better benchmarks in 3dmark 03/05 with your new system? As it's a new install maybe the problem lies with your online connection somewhere. Have have tried any other online games? Or even installed new Firewall, Antivirus etc that you didn't have before?
Just a side note, but does everyone still use MBM with no probs. My motherboard isn't listed (no wonder since last release was 2004) How do you get around this?
I don't use benchmarking software as I don't see the value of it. It'd be ironic though if this new system benchmarked better than my old one... There is no antivirus software installed. Firewall is the SP2 firewall that comes with Windows, just like before. I haven't tried any other games yet as this is all i've been playing for quite a while.
Well, now is when you'll learn to love benchmarks. I use the Everest memory benchies cause they are easy and quick. I agree that you probably have a RAM issue...is there an Asus forum that might cover the problem? If not, then repeated benches trying different module configurations might uncover a glitch. I'm not familiar with your BIOS, perhaps there are memory timing adjustments that would help.
No antivirus? How come? Im the other way round, dont bother with the windows firewall as its pooh, just use anti-virus and anti-spyware. Bechmarking software is usefull if you wanna find areas for improvement or just see how quick your system is. Have you got any other ram you can use in it? TBH you could just flog your current stuff to pay for some new 512mb or 1gig sticks, the ram is the only thing I would look at changing in your system and may be the root of your problem. What bios revision are you using?
The memory problem/issue isn't usually board dependent, since the AMD64's memory controller is on the CPU. There is an issue with running memory in all 4 slots at once, but that's supposed to be fixed on the Venice and San Diego cores, eh? Any progress? When I went from a similar P4 setup (with a 3.0) to an AMD64 3400 socket 754, my games sped up and lag in games practically disapeared
you wrote that you have 4 sticks... a8n sli with 4 stick config defaults them to 333mhz, you may want to check this
Agreed. I'm pretty sure that's the problem. I didn't even think it defaulted to 333...it may be less than that.
May not be related to your computer but it definately doesn't help that WoW runs crap servers. Theres no other game that requires 105+ servers. I know WoW is very popular but that is absurd. I think the RAM setting is probably your problem.
you got an asus board right?? the sli or not one.. so you got 2x network ports? Try switching the network port.. for the longest time i was having droping with the marvell (2nd) port on my MSI board..
I don't. Almost every second time i launch MBM5 (using the MSI K8N Neo(1), config, as there isn't one for the Neo2), i get wierd readings. Its completely random and i don't know what causes it because it either gives good readings or everything is completely whack! I just use speedfan now iirc there is some way you can manually enter the addresses for the sensors, but thats a bit beyond me...
Could the lag be due to the internet connection? If you use a Router might need to update the port forwarding...not sure if this is an issue for WOW but just thought id throw it out there
