The PSP and DS are gonna be so head-to-head this E3 I reckon. Good stuff :D

'PSP Vs. DS... The bout to knock the other handheld out!! You paid for the whole of your seat but you're only gonna use the edge!!'

The DS looks like a brick, but it does have strong developer support and the ability to play GBA games.

The PSP will have to have some good titles (and not just PS1 rehashes) in the pipeline if it is to succeed.

Wi-Fi for internet play. Bluetooth for 16 player multiplayer with a range of 100 feet. Backwarads compatabilty with GBA. Touch screen. Voice recognition. :D

    It's amazing!

The PSP may have better graphics but it will have boring games and will probably cost loads more.

It will have PS2 games, of which there are many already out. Imagine final fantasy on PSP? Also: they claim DVD playing (how in the hell, i dont know)??

The GB-DS will be good cause its a nintendo hand held but there are VERY VERY few games that Nintendo release that i would consider buying.

Sony will price it accordingly as they know Nintendo own the handheld market and to get a foot in they need to be competitively priced.

I think the PSP will be far more successful than the DS. The games are likely to have better graphics (the PSP, I think, is far more powerful than the DS is. Also, Nintendo consoles only seem to have cartoon games that are meant for children, with the occasional realistic one) and gameplay is also likely to be better.

Just imagine a PS1 but with slightly better graphics, hand held, stylish, portable, can play music files, and you can watch DVD quality films on it (FF7: Advent is being released on it as well). It may be more expensive to buy initially, but Sony have said that they intend to make the games very cheap (around 10-30 euros each), which is cheaper then DS games are likely to be (basing that on the cost of GBA games). They also said that music files will be cheaper than normal CDs, as will films.

Look at those graphics... if we compare those with Metroid Prime: Hunters for the DS, I think it's safe to say which looks nicer.

Here is a list of the current announced games for the PSP:

    Ape Escape
    ATV Offroad Fury
    Death, Jr.
    Dynasty Warriors
    Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children
    Gran Turismo
    MediEvil
    Metal Gear Acid
    NBA Street
    Need for Speed Underground
    NFL Street
    Project S
    PSP Racing
    Puyo Pop Fever
    Ridge Race
    Spider-Man 2
    Tiger Woods PGA Tour
    Tony Hawk's Underground
    Twisted Metal World Tour
    Wipeout Pure

    DS list:

    Animal Crossing DS
    Bomberman
    Dynasty Warriors
    Egg Monster Hero
    Mario Kart DS
    Metroid Prime: Hunters
    Mobile Suit Gundam Seed
    Pac 'n Roll
    Pac-Pix
    PictoChat
    Project Rub
    Sonic DS
    Super Mario 64x4
    Super Mario Bros. DS
    WarioWare, Inc. DS
Yu-Gi-Oh! Nightmare Trou (no idea what the rest is lol)

I don't really have time to actually mention anything else, so if you want to see what I think... go read Shambla's post. I agree completly with that ;)

TBH that's a load of rubbish. Just because a game can be enjoyed by children doens't mean it can't be enjoyed by adults too. Games don't have to have blood and swearing in them to be fun :duh:
And by occasional realistic games do you mean things like: Eternal Darkness, Resident Evil, Metroid Prime etc for exclusive games and all the other 3rd party games that come out for all 3 consoles.

I have to admit that the PSP does look good and the graphics will be better than the DS, but at what cost. It has terrible battery life, it has a CD spinning around in the back which means noise, loading times.

I will reserve final judgement until I've used both but ATM if I had the choice I would go for the DS :thumb:

Pic from PCZone: PSP & Disc

It won't play DVD's or PS2 games, it'll play UMD: Sony's own proprietry discs (they look slightly similar to minidiscs) with both games and movies being released in this format.
TBH, I can't see the film side of it taking off though, as people will be unlikely to want to buy the same film twice (on DVD and UMD).

What i realy thought when i saw the PSP was how durable the optical drive would be after reapeaded drops. Im not clumsy but accidents do happen.

    p.s. Nintendo pWn!!!

Ahh now i see. This is what i didnt get: how can it be portable and take a 12cm DVD? Na, i doubt itll take off for movies unless they encorporated an internal 4gig CF drive or something.

UMD's can hold 1.8gb of data and they are small like a Gamecube disk but I'm not sure what exact size they are.

Yea, but if it had a built in harddisk you could put a) music b) video c) files on it and make it uber useful. Not only that an OS that is possibly mod-able/customisable? Also, UMDs dont look that easy to write to?

I too have wonderd how you will play music on it  Maybe you have to buy pre done disks like the movies.

Can the PSP write to blank audio only media?

I notice the DS has reportedly got 3d specs similar to the N64, 120000 polygons per second vs the N64's 150000, does this mean loads of N64 ports instead of Snes ones? (hope so :thumb: )

Also before you say anything these are real-world figures and not theoretical figures like Sony uses (33 million).

You'll be able to buy music discs with video content plus download music onto memory sticks using DRM protected files (ATRAC3plus). And since it uses proprietary media, blank discs and drives are under Sony's control - even though the discs are supposed to come in recordable versions, you might have to use a kiosk in a shop or something.

Since this will be the first Sony console with decent copy-protection, it'll be interesting to see if this affects sales. (I don't know any PS/PS2 owners without any copied games, never mind having to re-encode all your music files)

Personally if it was 'open' and you could play any music/video and you could record onto the discs, I'd put my name down for one now, but until somebody hacks or chips it, its probably not worth it.
