Looking good. May I make a suggestion.. The first maybe if you add a second light behind the case badge it might spread the light out a little more. Or actually it might be better if you sanded down your LED so that the light is more defused it would show up as raidiating the case badge and not just the one part of it. just my 2 pents.

It's a Pioneer Slot loader and they are hard to find here as well. I got it back in May from MWave, but haven't seen anymore since.

Your absolutely right (of course), and I did want to do the 2 light deal. Alas, I'm running out of Pink LED's and one had to suffice for now. I may try the sanding trick, once I've placed all the remaining LEDs. Man you can't let me get away with anything can you :D. Thanks for keeping me on my toes!

Thanks, one hopes we are nearing the end, this journey has taken much longer than I ever dreamed.

Try Mini-ITX. They have slotloading drives (only slimline, though). They should ship to about anywhere in the world.

Yes it does to a certain extent, but the manufacturer (Cryo) has another line that is specific for that purpose. Linky Straight on (flat side) they are nearly clear (with just a tint of the color) but the edges just glow with the color. Got shown some samples at my plexi vendor. Very nice, but not what I wanted for Pinky2.

    Welcome to the forums!

Go make it and post a project log!
I got my hands on some translucent white plexi lately (used it in a few places on Pinky2 recently) and really like how it looks...kind of wished I'd backed all my florecent Pink plexi with it to begin with! Then Pinky2 would of really looked pinkish.

Yea, I've looked at those as well. I'm looking at the Panasonic slimline for my next mod, since they have a combo drive slot loader.

    Pinky2 | 02/14 | Still sort of moving along

A bit more progress of late. Got three or four quality modding hours in this weekend. Lets roll right into the pics:

Wire management at last. As this mod has gone, this is an "unexpected revision" to the case. So now I need to drill holes without screwing-up the paint job. First step mark the spot and loosely cover with masking tape on both sides.

Next drill a small pilot hole.

Then go at it with the step bit. I drilled from both side to get rid of the ridge of metal.

Clean hole. And more importantly a relatively clean case. The masking tape captured the majority of the shavings.

Hole size marked off the step bit with masking tape, 3/8 inch for this one.

The back side with the wires running through...bit of a mess.

The next project requires tapping a screw hole into the back of my plexi drive rails.

Then taking left over bits of chopped off screws, I create studs. This was the lazy mans solution...I really didn't want to chop anymore bolts to size.

And I did all that to attach my new Shiny perf aluminum drive bay backer.

Drill holes, add grommets and the lighting wires are done (they will in the end be sheathed).

Got the plug-in places for the DVD and CD drives mapped out.

And the dremel makes quick work of those. I'd like to dress-up these openings, but am not sure exactly how.

Well still plenty to do. Need to make a few more openings in the bay backer, SATA, molex for the HD, plus the wires for the power-on and HD indicator. Plus I need to find a way to attach the backer at the top. Once all that is done, then it's time to install everything in the bays...the list seems endless.

Any questions, comments, suggestions and criticism are welcome.

    Looking good...too good :grr:
Keep up the good work, it's looking very much a perfectionist piece of work here, you're definately putting a lot of effort into it :)

Well, thanks for coming out of lurk mode to comment and knowing who Pinky is..oh what's that...yes, and of course Pinky would like to thank you too :D.

Ah, yes well this project is themed after my 15 year old daughters teddy bear "Pinky". She's had it since she was 6 months old. Here is the original Pinky:

She is showing her age a bit. Not terribly pink anymore. The masking tape is Pinky2girl's way of keeping poor Pinky's head on.

Slowly but surely, but she's getting there.

Thanks for the comment. Yes there has been a bit of effort put into Pinky2, seems for every bit done there have been 1 or 2 "practice" bits first. :)

 Well I understood that the pink color washed off. Plus the camera might make it look "not pink". Well but the masking tape looks funny :D

Great Job so far!!! Go pinky

It really hasn't been asked that much and I've fallen into the same trap on other logs, mostly for not reading closely enough. I really don't mind, would rather answer the occasional "why Pinky2" question than slam somebody for not knowing...plus added bonus, now it's explained again in the log, perhaps forestalling the question again.:)

Yea, Pinky has been "modded", kind of ghetto though.:)

Got a story about the color.
When Pinky2girl was around 2 (or so), we took a trip to DisneyLand CA. On the return flight Pinky was left behind in the airplane. This was noticed (of course) an hour after we got home at Pinky2girls bedtime. No Pinky = No sleep for anyone. I called the airline describing Pinky as closely as possible. They said they had found a teddy bear on that flight but (rather suspiciously stated) the bear they found wasn't actually Pink, more of a tan color. Already Pinky had lost her luster and none of us close to her had noticed. I raced to the airport (as Pinky2girl was quite upset) to the Lost and Found office. There waiting for me was Pinky and the attendant (the very same I talked to on the phone) handed her over with many assurances from me that this was indeed our Pinky. Pinky2girl was happy and for many months later all heard the much elaborated story about how Pinky getting lost on the airplane (Pinky at the time was quite the character, and always communicated privately to Pink2girl about all of her experiences).

So Pinky hasn't looked Pink for a very long time.

Don't think I could of stood 2 days of Pinky being gone. We only had to live through a few hours of Pinky gone missing, can't even imagine what 2 days would of been like :eeek:!

Pinky2 | Update 03/01 | DigiCam down for the count

Last weekend I was making progress on Pinky2. After several hours of work, it struck me that I hadn't taken any pics for the log. Camera was nowhere to be seen (it lives in the modding workshop). I finally discovered it upstairs on the kitchen island with batteries next to it. After a short investigation, I found that my 12 year old son had borrowed it to take pictures of our incredibly photogenic dog "Rocky" and it wouldn't turn on. I placed fresh batteries in the camera...no joy, I tried "new" fresh batteries...same results.

So there was nothing left to do but take the sucker apart. I had a spare camera of the same model that I had just gotten from a friend...also not working. So after several hours, I now have two identical camera's torn apart with neither of them working. Each camera had different issues. Mine will not power-up, the friends will power-up, but won’t extend the zoom lens. I was exchanging parts between them, trying to get something to work. Real Life got in the way and now my modding area is strewn with camera guts.

I'm pricing out a new DigiCam. I have two (currently non-working) Fuji FinePix 2800's and am looking to replace with the new 3100, but am open to suggestions. Looking for 4 MegaPixels, around $300US, has macro setting.

Back to Pinky2, small text update.

I'm continuing work on the drive cage.

    1) Though the LanParty Mobo comes with a nicely rounded IDE cable, it is UV reactive green...not good for Pinky2. So, I took a flat ribbon cable and made my own rounded very Pinkish cable, pretty common mod, but a first for me. This In have pics of.

    2) I worked out how to "dress-up" the openings in the perf alumn drive cage backer (this is what I was grabbing the digicam for). I went to my local Auto Zone store looking for rubber U trim, they had nothing like that. What I did find was small diameter black washing fluid replacement hose, and it seems to work just fine.

    3) I rescued an old bathroom scale from our trash. I'll be incorporating parts of this into Pinky2, pictures would of made it obvious. :sigh:

    4) I finally tested the 40mm fan that is cooling the Hard Drive. Noisy little sucker at full power. I put a 1k pot on supply line and with that can turn it down to a dull roar. Now I’ll have to find a way to incorporate the pot. Also found a compatible male molex from my scrap heap and lengthened and pinkified the wires for it.

That’s it for now. Any camera suggestions are welcome.
