Got some more work done recently but the forums died so couldnt post. anyway, enough excuses. I got a reasonable amount done, sadly it is just more of the same brackets and sides but it is gradually looking like a box, if not a case. Its slowly looking bigger and taking up more and more of the garage as more bits have to come off to fit in the drill press. Every time i add a new piece, 2 have two more have to be removed for it to be drilled for the next one. With all of the short pieces connected to one side it does look like a nice box. This are lethal, ive jabbed myself repeatedly with these pointy buggers. Lest ye all be warned All they need is to be attached with 3 braces for each side and they're done. This does however present a problem, for the 3rd brace as just as when i had a 2nd brace to add, the bracket got smaller, so yet another template. And with it in place you can see the results. So the work so far ammounts to 2 completed sides, 4 short pieces attached with 2 or more braces, and 14 out of 24 braces in place. 10 more and i have a suitable box to start looking at internal layout more specifically. Does anyone know where you can buy Lian-Li PC60 sliding motherboard trays in the UK? I've found a US supplier but they still haevnt got back to me with any shipping ifno for the UK. Ta.
The frame weighs roughly 6 1/2lbs, thats not including sides which'll bump it up more. when/if it ever gets filled with HDs it'll be much heavier. One HD is 1lb 6oz so with 15 in it'll have about 21lbs of HDs, a mobo tray, and all the other gubbins. Realisticly, you'll be looking at 2 stone all told when it finished and full. But that wont be for a while, ive only got 2 200GB drives so far and a cpl of 160's which i'm moving to the desktop. I'd say it'll be about 1 stone when i get it finished tho, and have a few HD's in.
2 Stone is about 11 or 12kg, when its full. when it finished it should be nearer 5-6KG ish. and the frame will weigh about 2.5kg.
Awesome build, awesome posters (especially like the lock, stock one ). Good work mate, can't wait to see how this one turns out
More Work done, got the other 2 brackets installed to complete one side of drilling completely done. Which is pleasing. Only 8 more to do now and its done (the frame anyway). Dont know when i'll get round to doing more work as i start a job tomorrow, so after this sunday it'll only be wednesday i can gaurentee time. which is a shame but the money will help buy Hds More this weekend.
Woo, Shell done. Yay, eventually after much delay from uni and work (ick) ive got the case shell finished, and there was much rejoicing aswell when it was measured up and 6 of the 8 sides are perfectly square. only 2 of them are about 1/8" or 1/4" out on the diagonals. so im happy anyway, on the pics. this for those of you who dont remember or cant be bothered to look back at the begining was the first case i did with my mate, and it was good, but not square, at all, anywhere Ahh, the new case in all its glory, or at least the shell. A nice size comparison between the two cases, theres not as much difference between them as i expected but at least its smaller and more manageable now. Finally, a comparison between the old HD bay unit and the new case. I'm going to try and put some designs up for the new HD bay designs (yes this does make version 3, at least) which should be far more cunning and allow easier swapping of drives.
... and now in Unistrut, so everything is really sturdy and square. http://www.unistrut.com/pdf/Nuclear.pdf I admire your persistence.
Not a fan of the uni strut stuff, did look into it quite a bit though, decided it'd be better done 100% bespoke
im definately gonna be following this one!! keep up the great work! i cant wait to see how this turns out Cheers
Right, this project is going to go even slower from now as i have a 2nd project which is debatably more pressing to start soon. Recently aquired 21 P166 and 200's from the grand sum of £0.00 Eventually they'll be a cluster of some variety but at the moment, they occupy a large corner of my living room (along with 4 P2's and a 486DX2 'Team Server' with 2x 1GB scsi drives), hence the urgency to remove his huge stack of cases. anyway, this will be running in parallel with Serverama hence the slow progress, sorry. EDIT: Clustarama incase you want to follow
Kinex were always plastic, i think it was some other thing that was metal. I can't remember the name but i know exactly what you're talking about.
Erector sets. I played with both k'nex and erector sets as a kid Never will forget the 5' tall spinning space station I built entirely out of k'nex, that thing was class It also nearly mamed the dog when I turned it on, at that time I had not figured out what newton's laws were and their effect on spinning k'nex constructions Anyways, that's enough of a threadjack
