    The basic stereoType of a computer is a big ugly box that is filled with ciruit bords and wires, as years have gone by the moddern computer now has colour'd fans lights and even windows to see inside.

    Now I am planning on turning my old "stereo" into a computer case. now this stereo is going to do a lot more than just play music. with:

    1.2ghz CPU
    40gb hard drive
    GeForce 4 MX 420
    and a floppy drive

    This is going to be one of the best stereo's around

    Heres the.. well stereo:

    I see great things for my first ever major case mod :hip:

    uhhh dont we all hate dust, and mess :jawdrop:

    right so ideas to do to it would be great, heres what I've got planned so far:
    on the front theres a hole. 60mm fan grill there.
    on the left side theres a good space for a 80mm fan (colored leds of course.)
    1 or 2 green cold cathodes inside.
    maybe a window on the top. :naughty:

    Might be pretty cool if you can pull it off right, innovative case idea as well hope it goes off without a hitch. :thumb:
    I guess the M/B will go on the bottom and the CD and floppy (if you use one) can go where the CD turntable is. I guess the M/B could be mounted on the right side as well though, keep us updated on the progress.

    Well, I signed up to reply to this. Well, actually, it was Zap's media PC but I'm yet to reply to that.

    Quick suggestions if you can pull them off:

    1. You could rip apart a CD drive and use the stereo's original buttons to have a 3-cd changer DVD/CDRW drive. It would be hard to do, but cool if you could pull it off.
    2. If you have the time / money, you could have fun with the LCD. You could either:
    a. Make a controller for the existing LCD and use it (but nearly impossible).
    b. Mount a new LCD in there and try to get it as close to the original as you can.

    My "philosophy" for putting mods into different things is so that you can't tell it's a PC by looking at the main unit.

    Hope your mod goes well!

    thats a cool idea u got goin there....now i wish i hadn't smashed my moms broken aiwa stereo...

    well, heres some ideas: take out the cassette decks and put a piece of mesh there and put 3 80mm fans behind it......put a vfd where the old screen was......use the volume knob as a fan rheostat.....make as many of the buttons as possibe serve a function and bondo up the unused buttons.....

    ok lads some good ideas there but some a little too hard,
    Im going to try and use as many of the buttons there as possible.
    I think its just a must to have the "power" button (top left) ad the on switch :naughty:
    and a great idea from chairman666 to have the volume knob as a fan speed controler. will do that :rock:

    heres another pic :)

    That stereo's perfect for stealthing drives. I figured my ideas were too hard (maybe not for zap) but the buttons are perfect really. I'm sure you could wire up the existing power switch right into the motherboard since it's only a momentary switch.

    I like the way this is going.

    It might be easier to stealth the floppy and CD behind the Cassette tray then have it flip down for access-- just a thought if it might work.

    Heh, I had been thinking of stereo-type as a project name for my jukebox project :worried:

    Looks like you have a plan, however making it look "authentic" may be slightly difficult :sigh:

    wow.... al those unused buttons........

    theres a matrixOrbital VFD out there that allows for a keypad function, what would be cool is hooking all those buttons up to it and having them all have do something.

    It would be cool if you could setup a scsi raid 0 on this, theres alotta space to do it it looks like

    *edit* and what are ya gonna do with the tapedeck area?

    Welcome to the forums :)

    Indeed it does look like you have a plan.

    I'll have to move this to the Modding section as this doesn’t yet qualify as a project log under forum rules here. Plans and ideas threads go to modding until some solid work has been done. Let an Admin or Moderator know once some modding has been done and posted with pics and it will be moved back to the Project Logs forum.

    Happy modding :) :dremel:

    I was considering something like this, i've got an old Hi-fi with a dodgy CD players and a dead Tuner but the Mini Disk still works so it's being left alone just now. I'm going to watch this with interest tho - have fun :dremel:

    Are you going to use it "as a PC" or as a standalone player too? In that case I suggest you using a PIC and the stereo buttons to control your system...

    Nice idea; can't wait to see the final result!

    Have a good modding. :rock:

    hello, :p
    Im undecided to what im going to do with the tape decks just yet.
    Im thinking of getting a lcd screen alot. not sure on the cost yet.

    As for the space:
    mobo = 32cm*10"
    hdd = 6"*4"
    psu = 6"*5"*8.5cm
    case = 14"*11"*13"

    Im going to start cutting a motherbord tray and the back of the case for an I/O sheild, slots and blowhole for the psu. :dremel: :rock:
