I started to make this case about three years ago when I only had hand tools and not actually any of the tools I needed to make this case the way I wanted it. (I now have the right tools) It is made out of .25" plexi and .5" plywood alternated to allow light to pass through. Maybe you guys can use this as a start for a new design.

I know that this looks like crap and that why I am not going to finish it. Now that I have a planer, table saw, etc I can actually get stuff squared and perfectly flat to make it look a hella lot better. And using wood screws to hold on the side pannels was the dumbest idea ever.

Hey zachjowi don't worry it needs few hours more of work and it will look nicer. Plain wood looks good :>Cheers!

Neat look, but what I'm trying to figure out is how you glued 2 very different materials together...
There's a pretty noxious contact cement for making countertops and such, but I think it would totally kill plexi.

they are not glues together. I drilled .25" holes through the top sections and the front pannel section and used three pieces of .25" threaded rod hold it together.

Since I am not going to finish this case I am thinking of throwing it out. can anyone tell me if you think it'd sell in the FS threads? and how much?

    thanks

Noes don't trash it! I don't see anyone buying that, cause they might just as well do it again from the beginning and say "I made this entirely"...

DUDE! FIX it and rebuild it, It's amazing! Wood + Plexi this is the best, Add leds to the plexi and every thing will be kickass! Just redo it, mean sand it and paint and drilll new holes and polish it and it will be brand new, After all it's your choise!

    Good luck.

The thing would look really nice if the wooden parts were just matte black, and none of the wood mark things (can't think of exact word) were showing through.

But it probably looks much better in person than in picture, so I don't know.

The way this was built you could have put some seriously crazy curves in the case. I'd like to see you or someone take this technique to it's most extreme potential.

This kind of thing has been done by various people but I especially like how you did it with the black and clear which provides a very nice contrast. As Cheapskate said, this method lends itself to curves and I'd love to take him up on his challenge (unfortunately not until i get back from Italy next summer) but it is definitely a good idea. If I were you, I'd redo it taking what you've learned from the first one. The result will be infinitely better than the first one and could really be a great case, good luck! :)

thank you. I might wait until I am in college and then try to build one of these there for a project or something.

Doesn't really belong in project logs unless you're making a new one. But I like it. I think Zapwizard did something similar.

RATS! I thought zachjowi bumped this with a new design or something...
Seriously, anyone reading this with a buttload of materials and a laser cutter should play with this. You could integrate the drive cages into the faceplate...even add ducting channels. On colored plexi you could change the depth of the material to vary the amount of light passing through.
Man! -I wish I still had access to that plastic scrapyard.... Maybe I could make a sketchup and let someone else build it...
