    Hi guys,

It's been a while I know. I've only just modded something for the irst time in AGEEESSS. (Can't afford this hobby)

I've taken a spare PSU, and a spare cdrom. wacked it on my desk with some spare computer speakers and am using it as a cdplayer for work.

My question is t hough, on the top of the cdrom it has

    1A @ 12vDC and 1A @ 5vDC.

How hard is it to take 240AC and convert it to those specs and power my CDROM without a big lunky PSU on my desk.

I'm looking for simplicity here, basically.. I want it to be 1"*1" or something of that size and simple as it gets.

I know I need a coil to slow the current down to 12v, and then one of those one way diode things. Then will I be able to use a resistor to slow 12v down to 5v if I use I = VC?

Please let me know how you think this is best down...

    Thanks guys

buy a moltivolt adapter for £5.99 set it two 12V the cut the plug off to sepatate Live + ground. Then wire it into a molex.

Just an idea make sure you use a circuit breaker incase it goes tits up

Second thought after seeing this statement

i dunno if you should even try to wire a plug :)

Shrug, Im under the impression inductance slows current down.

I don't really wanna buy an adapter, because I need one to handle 2amps and just the little 3mA ones here cost $40Au

Which is half of what I earn in a day

A psu is effectly the adapter, buy a very old one say 250Watts of like ebay or something.

The desolder all the wires from inside except the four standard molex ones. Thats going to be the easiest way to do it.

the smallest way would be to use a plug in a adapter and use a PP3 (square battery) stlye clip to convert it to a molex plug.

    quick physics lesson

inductance is caused by a moving magnetic feild, as in one created by a current alternating in a wire wrapped around a soft iron core, the changing magnetic feild then induces a current in another wire wrapped around a soft iron core (or transformer).
The ratio of the times the wire is wrapped around the iron core is proportional to the ratio or the current in the first wire, inducing current, to the current in the second (induced current).
with loses to hystaresis (not sure on spelling), magnetostriction, heating and sound etc.
    in laymans terms

whats that got to with resistance, that EMI

    Electro Magent Induction
(making electricity from an induced change of magent field)

what you ment to say in the physics lesson is

    For transformers

    Input power = Output power
Voltage x current in = voltage x current out

If you reduce the curent you increase the voltage
