...So I just got a call from "Roger" at "Azure PC Solutions" to tell me there was something wrong with my computer. It may or may not be a virus/malware, and it may or may not affect other computers - he can't tell me the name of it, but on their server there is a red warning light flashing for my IP address. As curiousity killed *this* cat I bit - so asked him for my IP address - which apparently is 192.168.1.3

...To prove to me that he was not just a random idiot/scammer after I suggested he had no details and was talking vague enough for the situation to apply to anyone - he got me to check my events log (talking me through step by step how to open computer management) to see if there were any "Yellow Warnings" or "Red Errors" which was proof that there was something wrong with my computer. At this stage I tried to make a joke - and said Yes, it's called Windows (which is apparently not funny!)

...Anyway - he then wanted me to loginto "logmeinrescue.com" which as far as I understand is essentially remote desktop via the WWW. Oh - and when I asked him how he got our unlisted phone number - he said that they were calling anyone with a "red warning light" on their server!

...Has anyone else had the delight of shooting the breeze with Roger, or Sam (his suprevisor - apparently I warranted talking to the boss man after I asked him what he wanted to sell me continously until he passed me of to his supervisor)??

Yes, it's a scam... Although they usually pretend to be calling from Microsoft because your computer has alerted them to problems and they want to help you resolve them.

Basically they remote in using Team Viewer or LogMeIn and go to your Event log, which Windows been Windows and all will have the occasional Error in there, not a problem - it happens.

But they'll tell you these are serious problems and to fix it you need to make a one off payment of £50 or so.

I had something like this a while ago, I let them spew out their crap about which virus I had, what damage it could do and how much they would charge me to remove the virus ect. He maybe babbled onto me for 5 mins as I played along all dumb.

Then when it came to the crunch and he wanted my card details, I asked him if I needed to buy a PC first so he could remove the virus from it as I currently didn't own one.

He then mumbled something about me being a time waster and hung up.

My dad is great an Trolling the cold caller people. Best one he did was a woman who phoned round for double glazing ect, conservatories ec.

After maybe 20 mins on the phone the rep had gone through all the options, worked out some basic price outlines, booked an appointment for someone to call round and work out the finer details of having a conservatory fitter. She was pretty chuffed with herself when my dad asked if the price included stilts.

This threw the caller, and she asked why we would need stilts. She then hung up when my dad explained he lived in a first floor flat.

Oh I've known about them pesky guys for a while, one of our customers unfortunately paid them and as he was "fixing the problem" he disabled her display so she couldn't see what was happening and he told her to leave him with the machine for an hour or two and he'd call her back when he had finished, god knows what he did but as she'd only just got the system from us and was worried about what he'd done we totally formatted it and re-installed Windows for her, ran some root kit checks etc and the system was clean so... *shrug*

I don't think they're installing key loggers or anything like that just trying to scare people into paying cash.

Like walking around a multi story car park in a high vis vest spotting a car that's outstayed it's paid time and waiting for the owner to return. Telling them they're going to get fined £120 or they can pay you £50 upfront now and avoid the fine. - Yes that's a scam too, some guys were doing it at a place where my friend works security.

Me too. Got an XP virtual machine for testing out malware and drive-by-downloads. Not surprisingly it has issues with keyboard and mouse locking up every now and then. Slow as hell too so I'd love to see what kind of BS those "Windows Company" people could come up with.

    This is brilliant.

This thread should now be devoted to trolling these cold callers.

    1. Receive call
    2. Troll caller
    3. Post results here
