Which is best for a Sayno Denki 53cfm jobbie?? Can remember the Wattage though, but its quite high (not near delta 80mm though).
Also what happened to your classic "happy moddin" at the end of your articles? Youve just put "the end" on this its a small thing, but something i always noticed and liked

Slight mod is to connect the unused rheo terminal to the slider. Then, if the slider contact ever fails (dirt, etc) the fan continues on minimum speed.
We wear belt and braces in Yorkshire.
Good point. I always connect any unused terminals to wipers as prudent design practise, but in this case the aim was to make things as simple as possible. (As I try to for most of my published circuits)
how would i add a led to this simple fan speed control? .. Where precisely? Just thought it'd look nice with a led....

and i just wanted to know if it is possible to add a led to it, so that it's brightness shows the fan speed, the brighter - the faster the fan, the less bright - the slower the fan.
Can this be done?
if you wired the LED on the output side with a resistor to run on 12volt(or max voltage of the line), then as you dimmmed the voltage the led would dim.
Maplin appear to be stopping/have stopped the variable resistors used in this article

why don't you use a sliding pot for speed control?
that means you could have a sorta scale or somathing beside it..

What if I use a bigger pot to do this mod? Let say a 5k
the control would be far more sensitive and probably stop the fan after not much turning
At least it would work, so I don t have to buy another one, I had a couple of 5k left
i have a question
Macroman, does "rheostat should be rated at least 3 Watt, (for fans up to 10Watt)," mean that you can put fans that take 10 watts of juice on a 3 watt rheostat without any rheostat burning up or heat problems? it seems to me that 3 watt rheostat means that the rheostat can take 1 fan of 3 watts... (confused) i did the circuit and everything and even added 6 blue leds, but im not sure about the 3 watt/10 watt thing, so im only controlling 1 fan now... i put my rheobus on a 5 1/4 inc faceplate with the 6 blue leds on top. cool article tho and thanks! i was wondering why my 25 ohm pots were creating smoke... turns out they were rate 0.5 watts..
