I am going to purchase an Acer Aspire Revo in a couple of months as a low powered HTPC for playing back music and films. I have not yet decided which front end i will use but it will either be windows 7 media centre or XBMC. In the mean time i am going to purchase a bluray drive and a 1tb HDD to start ripping my film collection. I have read a previous thread and particularly Fod's excellent post quoted below.

Following Fods advice i intend to purchase anyDVD HD which will allow me to rip my DVD's and blurays but which software should i use for ripping the films themselves. If possible i would like to remove all the extras and sound tracks i wont use etc. Also how do you structure your movie's folder so either W7MC or XBMC can find the films?

    Thanks,

    DRB

iirc slysoft dont give updates indefinately now.

DVD Fab might be what you are after in terms of ripping the movies from the disc.

it also might be worth transcoding the rips to another codec to reduce the file size.

I could never get AnyDVD to work properly, so I use DVDShrink for DVDs, and MKVMaker then Mediacoder for Blu-ray.

MKVMaker creates a raw MKV (~25Gb) which I then reencode to something a little smaller.

Thanks for the replys guys. I dont want to compress or alter the movie in anyway as intend to get a projector in a couple of years so i want the highest quality for archiving purposes. I'll give DVDfab a go as it seems to do everything i want in one package. anyDVD seems to be ragrded as the best but it gets expensive when you buy the HD variant and i would still need something to remove the extras etc.

Anydvd HD for me. I then use RibBot x264 to convert to mkv.

    Hi there:
I am delighted to share the ripping software I am using.
Combining with the capacity, prices and other main functions, I hereby list top three Blu-Ray Rippers searched via Google and hope them will promote your better understanding of Blu-Ray Rippers.
    A)Moyea Blu-Ray Ripper
    B) Xilisoft Blu-Ray Ripper
    C) AVCWare Blu-Ray Ripper

According to the analysis and comparision, I find that both Xilisoft Blu-Ray Ripper and AVCWare Blu-Ray Ripper can not support independent conversion. It means that we are required to buy third-party software (Any DVD) before installing and ripping the Blu-ray Disc or movies. But, we should be clearly aware that the price of Any DVD is from $100 to $150. Contrarily, Moyea Blu-Ray Ripper enables users directly rip and convert your Blu-ray movies and general DVDs, even the protected DVDs and Blu-ray DVDs to your PC or portable devices without any third-party software. It saves us much money. With it, we can even directly copy or rip to the hard disc or portable players for playback. Moreover, it enables users to select master audio track and different languages like English, French, German, etc.

Although both of them are the same in selling prices, AVCWare Blu-Ray Ripper does poor in terms of the CPU visual function.

Furthermore, Moyea Blu-Ray Ripper can select or replace the output audio tracks and subtitles, but, Xilisoft Blu-Ray Ripper and AVCWare Blu-ray Ripper can not possess the functions.

Last but not the least, though Moyea Blu-Ray Ripper is a bit cheaper than the other two programs, it applies advanced audio and video sync technology, which completely eliminates the unexpected video and audio issues like stuttering. Most importantly, this program won five-star comprehensive index finally.

Hope my suggestions would be helpful for you guys~

If you don't want to do any conversion, just a plain main-movie rip of the BluRay, try Clown BD. Used in conjunction with AnyDVD HD, it'll rip the main movie of a BluRay and re-create in a BluRay folder style to keep your player happy. You do need to be careful of which audio stream you choose, or else the player will default to the director's commentary or other such nonsense, but apart from that it's fairly simple to use and works perfectly.

After you've ripped it with AnyDVD HD. Theres a handy command line tool called Eac3to. This tool will re-mux (no re-encoding, but your losing the extras and all that rubbish) them to MKV files if you wish to play them in media center.

That's what I chose to do anyways.
I think there's a couple of GUI programs you can get to make the process simpler.

Looks like clownbd is one of them.

Personally I use AnyDVD HD to remove copy protection as it just seams to work.
(without copying whole Bluray to HDD)

Then i use a program called TSmuxer.
add the largest m2ts file on the dvd and select the streams you want 1920x1080p video and the HD audio stream then mux to a .ts file
if this errors try ripping the Bluray to HDD first using AnyDVD copy to HDD option.

The resulting file will play back in WMC and XBMC.
My I also suggest that on a revo you use the live version of XBMC as it supports Hardware excelorated video decoding so you wont be as limited by the atom processor on video playback.

    Hope this helps
