My friend just bought a new zalman cooler for his nothbridge so asked me to fiz it, i willingly accepted. So i got his old nb heat sink off and tried to add thermal paste but had no means to do so. SO he gave me a screwdriver :sigh: i used it to spread the grease across the chip and obviously when i turned on nothing :wallbash: i cant believe a spread the thermal padter with a screwdrive, oh well last time im doing that :hehe:

Tip: Put your finger in a plastic food bad (Or cling film) and use this to spread the thermal paste. Gives a nice smooth finish!

How hard exactly did you press???

Ouch, what an expensive day... that was a bit of a silly thing to do, spread thermal compound with a screwdriver... never mind, sounds like your mate has more money than god if he just chucks a mobo he could RMA away like that... :)

could someone tell me why exactly it is a bad idea to spread thermal grease with a finger?, ive just spread it about with my finger for 1 NB, 1 CPU and 1 ZA80 gpu HS, and my finger is still very much ok. i dont go picking my teeth clean right after, i do actually wipe and wash my hands first, its just too inconvenient not having anything in my room to spread the stuff on with.

    EDIT:
And while i remember, why did you use the sharp end of the screwdriver? why not the side of it or was it an ultra long one, nm, cant do anything about it now. at least he didnt ask you for the money for the board. Still nasty

As for not returning the board maybe he felt the £100 monument to his foolishness was enough to keep him from ever doing it again if it was still in his room, dead. :)

yeah....you dont even have to use the plastic...just your finger is the best thing. thermal paste washes off.

Noooo. Dont use yur finger. Persistant use will make your finger turn to silver ...

No seriously, you shouldt use a finger, not because its bad for your finger but, because tis bad for the thermal properties of the paste. Your natural body oils can interupt the thermal connection.

A bit of cling film or plastic bag wrapped over the end of your fingertip works wonders for me.

I usually use a razor blade or a scalpel blade to spread the stuff over a chip.

Gives a realld good, uniform, thin finish :dremel::geek:

That's what I always use if I haven't got a stanley knife blade handy... Prefer using a CC tho, it's a bit harder to damage the core ;)

Yes I use a plastic card, although when I installed my Zal passive I think I put half on chip other half on heatsink.

Best spreader around, no need for tools, and no body oils... I have always used my tongue.

    Meh, toxic schmoxic.

I used to put it on my toast as well.

Not sure if you chaps in the UK have seen the breath freshening strips (thin membrane you put on your tongue and it dissolves all minty and fresh). Well I have found the next step, the thermal pads that come preattached to your heatsinks.... Man those things are great!

*Yes, I was dropped in my head several times as a young child*
