I'm building a budget ITX gaming rig with a G3258 that's going to be OC'd. It's on a MSI z87i Gaming AC mobo and I had bought a Alpenfohn Matterhorn in white as it's a white/red theme build.. Only now i've put it all together, the CPU cooler covers the PCIe slot as the CPU socket is in a weird position on the Mobo! Would a 92mm cooler be able to cool an OC'd chip, or would it be better to go the route of an AIO? Any help would be appreciated as atm, I can't have a GPU in it!
if you got a ITX system we need to know the clearance, and do you have tall ram? Something like a Thermalright AXP-100 could be a good option. image i found with your motherboard and the AXP-100 you can get 120mm rad AIO's for £38 new now tho if you did want to go that way.
I've got Fury RAM in the build, which is 32.8mm high.. Not high, but not that super-low profile stuff. As for the cooler clearance.. Apart from the CPU socket placement, it's got up to 200mm cooler clearance so anything that wont block the PCIE socket is good! It's just really annoying as if the socket was 1cm higher, it wouldn't be an issue! I'd seen those low profile coolers, but i'm not sure if they'll provide the same cooling capacity as the traditional tower one's for OC'ing..?
I am looking at the Cryorig C7 compact cooler for my ITX setup, but haven't seen much in the way of decent reviews for it yet.
I use a Thermalright axp200 on mine. My cpu socket sits very close to the pcie slot but it fits with enough space for a card with a back plate and a few mm to spare. Also swapped the fan out for a full thickness 140mm fan. It's nice that it pretty much cools the whole board as well.
What about the new ITX AIO that Corsair have launched? I thought Bit-Tech did a review but I can't find it. Here it is on the Corsair site anyway....... http://www.corsair.com/en-gb/hydro-series-h5-sf-low-profile-liquid-cpu-cooler
if he has 200mm of space he dont need low profile AIO, could get a full 120mm , 240mm versions. But that thermal right will OC well if you still wanted to get it.
Thanks for the suggestions guys! I've managed to get the cooler running 90* to the case (fan pulling air up to roof of case) for now, to check everything works before I find out I have to get new parts..
I was thinking about that, or the higher/ beefier version as a F you to the build but I need it to have decent cooling when a CPU's OC'd and i'm not entirely sure how much extra heat that'd produce!
I have the g3258 oc'd to 4.3 with a corsair h70 and it keeps temps around 50-55c when gaming Sent from Bittech Android app
I wouldn't worry about heat. I've had a 3258 on the stock cooler at 4.7 and it barely cleared the 80 marker.
