... and the first reviews are springing up! http://www.thedigitalbits.com/reviews3/starwarstrilogy.html http://michaeldvd.com.au/Reviews/Reviews.asp?ID=5247 http://michaeldvd.com.au/Reviews/Reviews.asp?ID=5248 http://michaeldvd.com.au/Reviews/Reviews.asp?ID=5249 http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1101040913-692895,00.html After reading the Digital Bits review, I'm actually quite impressed - even with the monkeying around Lucas has done. We're just going to have to live with it, until the uber 6 disc holgraphic immersion with THX 10.1 sound comes out in 2010... But still - it's StarWars. On DVD. The day is almost at hand!!
why do they keep messing with Star Wars? it was fine when the Box set came out.it was fine when it 15 mins of ****e was added a couple of years ago(in a galaxy not so far away) its fine without the stuff they've f***** with now need i say any more?
Why? Because George can. Deal with it. It's the best you're going to get. Don't like it? Don't buy it. I can't see it detracting from my enjoyment of the films that much, if any. They're small changes for the most part, and don't change the overall story at all, apart from a few little hooks to the prequels. As a huge Starwars fan, I will be buying them as they're the best possible copies available. I have the originals on pre 97 video, but they'll never get played again, as I just can't watch VHS quality movies anymore. Personally, I can't wait. Come the 20th, I shall be having the day off work and I shall regress to a small 5 year old boy - the same who sat goggle eyed in a flea-pit cinema in S c u n t h o r p e in '77, when an Imperial Star Destroyer rumbled endlessly overhead.... Yes, I know I come over as a sad fanboy, but at least I'm not rabid. I can't help it. Honest.
mwhahaha i'll wait till the last one and buy the full box set, it'll be a while but i don't care i hate having things not complete.
Personally I think the remastered, rejigged, cash-in special editions are, overall, superior to the originals. So I couldn't give two ****s about 99% of the hoo-hah the fanboys are on about regarding the new DVD. I'm gonna buy it and enjoy it. The only 'new' part I have an issue with is the crappy CGI Jabba in Ep IV which I believe has been sorted out... correct? BTW the BF1942 clone (hah hah!) Star Wars Battlegrounds AND the new Shadows Fall record are all out on 21st Sept too! OMG etc etc.
i'm not rabid.its just that every few years the old films are released with new content.its not integral to the story but its these tiny weeny little scenes here and there.GL is using the films as a cash cow thats what i'm against.
anyone who really cares that much can just go and buy a laserdisc player and the old laserdisc boxset
I can understand them wanting to redo special effects and so on, but why do they need to alter things that change the characters/plot? The one that everyone harps on about is the Greedo/Solo thing. Now, if Solo shoots first (he does, damn it) then his character becomes a lot more interesting- he goes from being a selfish cowboy to being a "good guy"- but since they made Greedo shoot first it just makes Han a lot more boring. And yes, I know, they have changed this *again* so they now shoot simultaneously or something. I'll probably buy it anyway, but if they later bring out the "proper"versions on dvd I'll be pissed off... Sam
Okay Star Wars has not become a cash cow. Star Wars pioneered the cash cow/merch tie in blockbuster phenomenon. I don't think some people either remember properly (or weren't old enough/alive) the sheer skull ****ing-ness of the original trilogy's cash making tie ins. Have you seen the Holiday Special for Christ sakes? It's nothing new so get over it. As for altering the movies, well I don't see anything in the Special Editions that really changes anything plotwise or characterwise. All you get are a couple of scenes showing some things that are referenced elsewhere like the Jabba stuff. Until George Lucas grafts on a better actor to replace Mark 'Slipstream' Hamboy, then I'm not going to really be too arsed. The new bit at the end of Jedi is like 3seconds long and has no dialogue from the new guy anyway so whats the big deal? As far as I can tell, almost all the new/Special Edition stuff was originally scripted and just either not filmed or ditched in the editing room... aren't fanboys supposed to want to SEE that sort of stuff?
Please don't remind me. My feelings as well. Yes, I loved the originals. Yes I went to see the '97 edits in the cinema. Ok Greedo fired first instead of Han, and Jabba looked like he was made out of Plastscine, but it was still the same film, and I still loved it. The other two were great as well - even Jedi. Star Wars has a special place in my heart - I grew up with the films as they where first released. I have such good memories of it that I even flew to NYC to see Episode I (well, it seemed like a good idea at the time... I still have issues [/TimBisleyMode] ) I have no doubt that the DVD's will rock big time. The circle is finally complete.
Here they come!!! Yes, I'm off work today. Postie arrived at 09:30. Already watched A New Hope, it rocks. This afternoon, after posting the news and having some lunch, I will mostly be watching Empire...
Yes i just got home from town and am already watching A New Hope! The Jawas are selling R2 and 3PO! Such classic films! Ill be watching em all night! -A-
Just got mine at 4 pm bit bad, but ive been at uni all day. But if i had the day off i would have been seriously miffed
Right, I've just come up for air after watching all three back to back, plus the Episode III teaser on Darth Vader, the Lightsabre featurette and the "Force is with them" featurette. The picture and sound quality on the main features is outstanding. Light years ahead of the old VHS versions. Once I've done the news snippets, I'll be watching A New Hope again, as Mrs Goo has got in from work. It could be a very very long night.
Postie came at 10 and I watched all three back to back then the documentary. I was quite impressed with it overall. There wern't too many changes (still prefer the original though) but I didn't like them. The ghosts at the end just didn't fit well. And it nearly spoiled it having the stupid Gunguns shouting 'Wesa free!!' Definately the best quality DVD I've ever seen. The picture was perfect, which is pretty amazing for a 30 year old film. Don't have surround sound at home so can't comment on that yet. Having a break from it and going to watch the rest of the special features tomorrow. Then at some point I will watch them all through again with the commentary. Oh and there's an easter egg to be found on the special features disk
I thought they were changing the Emperor to Ian Mcdermid? Anyone know whats going on or am i blind? -A-
