Greetings! From the Windows 8 thread: The smartphone is an Atrix 2. The device runs Ubuntu, doesnt emulate. Runs the same kernel. Canonical and manufacturers are working to have Ubuntu pre-installed in the next generation of Android smartphones (quads). Current smartphones will not have this. Oh the want is strong with this piece of technology Its a shame unity is such a lag fest, even on reasonable hardware. Hopefully it will improve as Canonical develops it. I would imagine all the doohickeys for operating the phone elements would be integrated into unity so a switch for something like gnome would break it. Whats really great is that the device drivers will more than likely be written by canonical for the phone allowing optimal use of the hardware. Drivers was always a let down with linux. It's nice to see a linux distro try and make a break in consumer electronics(I know I know android is massive). There has been a few attempts like dells selling linux boxes but nothing like this that could capture consumer interest. It will be interesting too to see how this pans out when it goes on sale.
GGreetings! Thats why Canonical needs manufacturers onboard. Drivers, according to him, are very closed.
I saw something about this a looong while ago, I'm sad there's not been much (outward) progress with this I think a large part of the problem is Canonical are trying to make everything too simple to use IMHO, the unity environment is just... well.. bad. I can't see why (other than the lack of MHL) the nexus 7 wouldn't be the perfect device for this.. at least in form factor.
I personally think that Unity for a desktop computer is a bad default choice. It seems to be designed for mobile devices, and in that field I am sure it will succeed. If this docking station also allows you to change to a different desktop environment when plugged in (like XFCE) then the want would be much stronger for me.
Yes unity is a poor interface, mostly the menu. It has the same throw all your crap together in one big pile approach that I don't like in metro. Sticking anything else on this is going to be community driven, I doubt canonical would put much effort in supporting other interfaces. Still I believe that unity will improve over time. How long before it gets better I don't know.
Some propaganda by canonical. No release date yet or news of consequence it seems. http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2012/11/canonical-release-new-ubuntu-for-android-commercial
Oh god - they used the 'virus free' line. Apple Mac OSX once used that line... now look where they are. The design is clever though - I still don't think the Unity interface is any good for serious work on a desktop much like Windows 8. If the desktop version could change desktop environments, like to XFCE, then this could become very cool technology.
Indeed a single virus epidemic (that I know of, there could be a few more) that exploited Java. It's hardly the scale of Windows malware. Anyway virus free is pretty much a true statement. It doesn't purport to be virus free forever though
http://www.ubuntu.com/ There is a count down on the website (as of before 18:00 GMT 2/1/13). Could be the launch of Ubuntu for Android. Hmmm...... Edit: Not ubuntu for android but ubuntu phone. Looks good on the face of it. There's the keynote
See I like the idea of a duel boot phone system, but i know I just wouldn't make any use of it. Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
Definitely I wouldn't have a non established O/S as my phone right now. But it would be cool to have a spare nexus 4 to play around with this O/S....Just looked at the prices on ebay. I definitely don't see a spare nexus 4 appearing in my future.
Nice idea. Now I am wondering how much will be the docking station? Now that ubuntu mobile is coming I really wish it has this functionality.
