As the title says, i'm considering it for my main rig, and wondering who here has experiences / knowledge about whether it's worth going up a grade...

Mainly the rig is used for work, gaming and music, if thats any help at all to the main question

    thanks

I wouldn't bother. You won't really see huge performance benefits, and the driver availability issues are still not completely solved (although it's a lot better than it was).

    No.

Unless you've got >4GB of ram, it's effectively pointless, and driver support is still lacklustre last I knew.

I'll give you my experiences trying to get XP-64 working correctly.

I did a clean format and install. Everything was looking wonderful, all of my drivers were working and all of my peripherals were working....except my printer. HP does not have drivers for my printer. Meh...whatever I thought...I'll figure out something.

I went to windows update and got all of the latest updates. Restarted and BLAM! Blue screen of death. I spent 3 days trying to get it to work. I did another clean install and installed the updates one by one. There were 2 that would render the OS useless...wouldn't boot at all. So I figured that out. I thought I was all good.

Well, apparently one of the updates also corrupted the display properties. It would not allow you to change the settings from classic windows. No theme support, nothing.

So I got fed up and quit trying. Maybe it was the trial version, I was trying to use the one year trial from a ways back. But whatever the problem...I'll just stick with what works.

Yeah I have 64 bit version and TBH I can't really tell much of a difference between it and 32bit version for my use. They both support all the hardware (eventually, thank you Canon!) and software I use and they both have similar performance.

If I was having to make the choice about what to get today I would just go by price.

I would just wait till vista with its native 64bit support. You wont get any real boost atm
