I'm a little confused. I thought Windows XP 64 was not officially released yet? You can still download a beta version from microsoft.. so what are OCUK selling here?
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/64bit/upgrade/default.mspx Although it says that only applies to the US...
So it's officially released? They kept that quiet... you'd think they'd make a little more fuss! I only found out by accident.
ya they relased it a while ago, atleast on this side of the pond, we were selling pc's with it but only on special order.
Oh. i never heard when it was properly released but like ppoky saw it on OcUk the otherday im guessing thrusday?
So it's released.. yet still a dearth of drivers, support, or games (well.. there's FarCry 64 I suppose). Welcome to the 64bit revolution.... NOT. I honestly found out by accident. Only the other day I was thinking that M$ should hurry up and release it so people may start developing for it.. well.. damp squib anyone? There's a wealth of 64bit PCs out there.. an officially released OS, and still it seems that Win64 is some niche, weird, beta type product that no one wants to use for lack of support. WHat's going on? Will Vista be 64bit?
i really dont see the point of xp64 i think they are just using it to get mass testing done on other projects... xp then vista if its any good tbh... leave xp 64 to the hampsters with ears on their backs to test
Is anyone on here actually using it? Is it faster? Just that Far Cry has a fully 64 bit version that's rather tempting, but I'll be damned if I'm going to go down this road for the sake of one game, no matter how much it rocks! If there are advantages in running XP64 then I'll do it.. otherwise... nah. Anyhoooo... is Vista 64bit? No mention of that in any article i;ve read (including bit's) or on the M$ website.
its faster, but there isnt as much driver support if you can get 64bit drivers for everything you use go for it vista will be both 32bit and 64bit
Yeah, just wait for Vista. I mean, it's not like it's release date isn't going to be pushed back until mid-late 2007.
I have XP x64 and it runs alright. Driver support sucks, especially for Network Cards. Right now I'm using the onboard LAN on my ECS and it cuts out every now and then. Very rare, it pretty much shuts itself down. I don't know if this is because of the x64 OS or just the board, but I can't use another NIC cuz for one, can't go buy one, and second the ones I have are not supported. The system runs quite well, and all my games work in some way at the end. (For some reason I gotta load a specific game that only uses Direct3d to use OpenGL, weird). As far as the OS being like official and all. Hopefully from the second link on this thread, the next release of updates will support 32-bit drivers and what not. I haven't installed a 32-bit OS on my new 64-bit yet, I try to get the most outta my processor cuz it's for gaming Otherwise I'd go back to XP 32-bit.
yeah my friend built a new 64 bit machine with xp64 and said he would blow mine outta the water... well its been a week and he still hasnt found drivers for internet, or any of those nice little addons he always puts in.
Hopefully by next month even. I gotta see if it's the OS or my board! I still can't get my network to work on it! The windows site kinda made it seem they would release another version at the end of this month. So that might help a little.
I have ran this for the length of my 180 day trial and think its pants. Loads of games don't work on it, drivers are hard to find, and those tweaks we all do to XP don't work properly or no longer apply. And diskeeper goes weird even though it says it will work on x64. Some programs/games even run slower on it! The only benefit I can see of using it is FarCry's 64bit patch, which doesn't really do anything noticable anyway (I don't play FarCry very often so I might have missed it). In one word: AVOID! Especially if you plan on paying for it.
