Thanks very much for those stats One_Box, unfortunately I was hoping to make it my main machine as it is the most powerful one I own and has the best graphics card. It's obvious from what you've said that I must have got something wrong to start running out of space so soon. For the short time I ran it the ram and swap usage was similar to what you quote so I don't know where the space disappeared to. I have already re-partitioned the drives and just await my current WU finishing in Windows so I can try again. This time I'm going to use Ubuntu 11.04 in a 200Gb partition and see how that goes. I expect by the time I'm finished getting it working they will release them to the Windows clients. Regards. Dave.
I've just picked one up on my 970@4.2 TPF 1.00.59 PPD 113,938 Credit 482,525 ETA +4 days PPD is worse than a 6903, but not much, about 5K
I think I have got it running Thanks to all who helped, esp tatty re using all 12 cores which was missing from musky's guide Sadly I got a P2686 to begin with, not one of the ginormous ones ..
6904 goodness At last. Finally.. After much toil and late nights fighting the evil penguin... It's here.... 6904 now being crunched on Ubuntu 10.10-ck(BFS). (i7-970-4.35GHz) TPF - a smidge over 1 hour. Estimated completion - 4 days and a little bit. Let's see what Friday brings points-wise. Next step on this epic journey....... HFM (wish me luck).
I've picked up a couple of the P6904 - yep, they are BIG!! Guys - forgive the dim question but ..... ..... my 980X has been at stock speed because of temps (at early 70's with a Corsair H50), but I thought I'd give the multiplier a little tweak to see what effects this would have. By changing the multiplier from 25x to 27x gets registered in a reboot as 3.6GHz in the BIOS screen (instead of the 3.33) but when it boots into Ubuntu, any of the tools I use say its still 3.33 - any ideas? (Note: I've disabled Speedstep and CPU spread spectrum)
what does this display? PHP: cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep -i Mhz I've just checked mine and it shows my correct OC speed.
Have you got another windows machine on the same network? If so very easy to just share the ubuntu f@h folder and view in HFM on the windows machine, that's what I do.
Do you have the Turbo setting on? Perhaps the chip is thermal throttling (one of mine did recently because I dislodged the heatsink fractionally whilst vacuuming the dust off it). What does a CpuTemp-type utility show? (I think one was recommended in a previous post in this thread). What voltage are you running the CPU at? Some of them will do much higher GHz than you think on much lower voltage than many people suggest. My 970 doesn't care so much about CPU voltage but is critical on tiny changes in QPI voltage. Temperature monitoring is something must look into myself now I've switched from Windows to Ubuntu.
Thanks for the tip. Yes I do have a Win XP workhorse machine that crunches SMP in it's spare time. But it's not running HFM (yet). I can monitor the WU on that via Client 7 but I'm looking at HFM because it seems it gives much better PPD/TPF projections and is available under Ubuntu/Linux.
Give i7z a try. It not only monitors temps without any noticeable impact on fah performance but also solves the Doc's problem by displaying actual CPU clock speed. Download from here Create a folder called i7z and then extract the file to it. run 'cd i7z' run 'sudo make install' run 'sudo ./i7z' Sometimes you have to run 'sudo apt-get install libncurses5-dev' prior to 'make install' in the event of errors. + well done for defeating the penguin
Thanks for this, I've been using sensors, this is much better! (BTW the last line should be 'sudo ./i7z')
Spoke too soon! Machine had a blue screen and the virtual box and ubuntu fell over and whatever folding it had done to date was all lost! I tried and tried re-entering the config info, but had some dumb issue with keys appearing to be pressed loads of times, so passkey was a non-starter. Off to bed in a huff, restarted Windows client as it needs far less looking after
Got the rig happily stable at 4GHz - but temps now at 85DegC (via lm-sensors) while Folding Luckily, I've got a Raven RV02 case and Thermaltake Frio arriving tomorrow - hopefully this will improve things .....
Doc, not wishing to teach you how to suck eggs here but, i would suggest not folding on that CPU until you can control the temps. 85 degrees is going to harm it. http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=47932&wapkw=(980x) T-case is 67.9 degrees and your at 85!!
What vcore do you need for 4ghz? my 980 uses 1.306v for 4.2, temps are around 70 deg now with a frio and to red wing fans (both the variable speed adjusters dropped off on my frio fans) My 970 needs more, 1.34 (can't remember exactly) that has a noctua d14 and runs a little hotter, though still around 70 degs, i'm not completely happy about both temps. I have a corsair 700d case sitting here ready to do my first ever watcooled project but I can't decide what to cool, the potentially better overclocking 980, or the hotter 970 I got briefly got the 980 up to 4.6ghz, the temps were horrendous, but with water who knows but I'm a bit uneasy about running a lot of vcore through such an expensive proc.
Yep, 85DegC is too hot - currently got a 35cm fan blowing in the side of the case to keep the temp down in the meantime .... Interestingly, my QX6700's, which have a lower T-case at 64.5DegC, have been in the high 70's for the last three years .....
Thanks for the info. I think I've probably been 'over generous' with the vcore, so I'll look at inching it back over the next few days ....
