Seems to me like you've done a pretty good job James. I know it isn't apples with apples with memory speed variations etc having an impact but, using my x5660s running at 4.2GHz as a baseline, the approximate back of a *** packet calculation gives:

    Dual X5660s at 4.2GHz (24 x 4.2 = 100.8GHz) = 22.50 mins tpf
    Dual W5680s at 3.46GHz (16 x 3.46 = 55.36GHz) = 40.97 mins tpf
    Dual X5650s at 2.93GHz (24 x 2.93 = 70.22GHz) = 32.30 mins tpf

The above assumes you're running at stock but with turboboost on.

The biggest potential improvement would be in switching over the 5650s.

Oops, I just realised I got the model numbers wrong, and have actually switched over the rig with a pair of X5680s (24 x 3.33GHz). Therefore, given the numbers in your last post, it still seems like its underperforming significantly.

Time to bash it with the naughty stick on Monday!

5680s! Where did they come from? I just love the way you can dip your hand into a bag of tricks and pull out a pair of xeons :D

Naughty stick time indeed. Give us a shout if you need any help.

From my desk drawer of course, AKA the bit/CPC processor museum :)

Thanks for your help so far phoenicis, the newer Linux distro has definitely helped, plus it comes with a pre-compiled version of HFM, which makes the whole system much easier to manage :thumb:

Some help required please good folks...

I've installed Ubuntu 11. and then followed the instructions here and it runs, but only on a single core. Any ideas how I get it to run on 12 cores instead of only the one?

    Many thanks

    Mike

Ubutu 10.10 with a various tweaks, as described in this guide.

It sounds like you forget to set any flags when running the client. For bigadv you should run './fah6 -bigadv smp 12' or for beta bigadv './fah6 -bigbeta smp 12'

You'll also need a passkey to get any bonus points.

Thanks James. I've changed the text file so that it matches your switches, and saved it, then re-run it. still only 1 core, buit now it's a different one (7 instead of 1)

I guess I'll have to wait till the workunit has completed...

Oh yes, sorry, forgot to warn you about that. SMP and single-threaded WUs are different, so the switchover will occur when the next WU is downloaded.

That should be './fah6 -bigadv -smp 12'. Notice the hyphen before 'smp'. You don't really need the '12', if you don't have a number the client will take all the cores it can find.

Afterthought - I've never tried using 'smp' without the hyphen ~ so perhaps it isn't obligatory either.

I've just spotted a mistake in my passkey. Have re-entered and it's looking a bit more promising now as it's deleting the existing work unit

Batch file that's created needs the - switch before each parameter, otherwise it gives an error, so I'm trying it now with...

    ./fah6 -bigbeta -smp 12

Looking good so far.... Will report back later...

That must have been it - wrong pass key.

    Thanks for the guidance folks...

    Thanks phoenicis :)

Will normal -bigbeta clients pick up 6904 automatically or is there a new flag? :)
