I'm probably just not understanding this correctly, but couldn't you just patch the one that didn't work out and sand it down to the way you want it?

Depends on what means "to the way you want it". If it means actual body panel... Yes, that's what I'm doing just now. However, this was not a original plan... It suppose to be a negative mould for a body panel...

Small update about how things advance...

In short, I cut all the excess fibreglass off and sanded down the edges, to define the shape and I'm currently working on the surface finish, what will take me a good while I guess...

Hi everybody, it's been a while since my last update, mainly due to holidays and busy time at work, but project continues and here is how it goes...

I've been working on the surface and shapes of main body panels for last week or so and I also started to work on the chassis as well (larger update about that next week, hopefully). I added a couple of layers of fibreglass, sanded it down, than a few layers of pure resin trying to fill low spots and sanded it down a bit again... the result is still not great, and I will need to add another layer of body filler and tweak the finish to perfection before painting, but I'm getting there.

    few pics:

test fitted a hinge to the bottom of the side panel and testing how it opens on a chassis, just now...

Ok, so I couldn't help my self and had to try to put the unfinished fibreglass on unfinished chassis :D ... just to see how it looks, how the hinges work, etc. There is a lot to be done on the chassis it self, the side panels as well, and I didn't even star to work on front and back panels, so still miles away from finish...

Great build! Shows real skill with your work.

Personally I think it looks more like a ladybird or beetle shell lol, however it's still pretty awesome looking and unique.

Keep up the hard work :dremel: and I love the video blogging.

For some reason when I saw the first couple of pics I immediate thought of the turrets from Portal.

Edit: It seems I'm not the only one who thought so :hehe:

What hardware will be going inside? Just some stuff that's lying around (since this is a secondary PC) or some nice new things?

Thanx, and nice to hear about the videos. I actually stoped making them as I thought they are boring, but maybe I'll make some more :thumb:

:D I love how ppl name my cases, Ultra was breadbin, than mailbox, now this one is butterfly, ladybird... good fun

    :thumb:

yeah, Portal... I had to google it out to see what you'r all talking about :D but your right... however inspiration didn't come from there ;)

well yes, it is a secondary PC, but just as a concept. I'm planing to get all new components for it, but later as it's still a bit too early at this stage, and my budget is a bit tight right now as well :D

thank you all from comments! :thumb:

pretty sweet man! because your using Fiberglass you might want to take a look at riekmaharg2's Silent Fiberglass PC. He did a fantastic job making a custom fiberglass case and achieved an excellent finish despite some interesting contours. You might considering reading through his worklog to look for tips if you haven't already seen it.

I don't think I've seen anything like this. This is pretty cool. I personally thought of an egg being cracked in half seeing the halves down. I really like shapes that keep a system from having that typical boxy look that most of them have.

Yeah, that's what I aim for with this one, not being "just a another box". It's not that I don't like right angles or something... just wanted to try something else. My other project I'm starting next week will be a plain box by the way :D
... and thax for your comment :thumb:
