i use a paid for version of avg network edition( changed name to business edition i think) due to running business from home, and working with customers machines and harddrives
I run Teatimer which comes with Spybot S&D as a background process and use Opera and no, I've never had a problem.
Mix of Avast and MSE on all my windows machines. Nothing on my ubuntu installs, but i'm assuming the poll is for windows.
MSE running on every machine in my house, plus on my cousin's network (he's on a VPN to mine). Can't recommend it enough.
I use MSE on my main rig and on my laptop, but with real-time protection switched off because I can't stand the notion of an AV screwing with my system performance even just a little bit. MSE on the parents' laptop, but again with realtime switched off - Primarily because it's a P4 Dinosaur with only 256MB of RAM and it struggles with modern iterations of Firefox and WinAmp, nevermind on-access AV scanning. KlamAV on my Linux box just to cover any samba shares and network drives accessed by Windows systems on my network. A full scan of both my laptop and main yesterday returned nothing in MSE except for one or two false positives (of the type where the app simply asks if you want to allow the file or not). I haven't had any virus problems in something like 5 or 6 years at this stage, but it's good to have the peace of mind of a competent scanner available on-demand. I used AVG Free for a while until it became a bloated, glitchy monstrosity; and also used ClamWin for some time before MSE was released. I refuse to give any of my money to the likes of Norton or McAfee as their apps have proven to be worse than most viruses for slowing down prebuilt junk boxes from Dell, HP and their ilk when I'm called out to fix a neighbour or friend's system. With MSE out these days and the consistently positive reviews of its performance I find it harder and harder to see any place in the consumer market for Norton, McAfee et al. A combination of common sense and NoScript/AdBlock keeps me fairly safe from drive-by infection for the most part, I think.
MSE on all PCs and laptops - I echo previous statements about unintrusiveness, being free, and quite effective. I used to run Kaspersky on several machines, and whilst I like it and its depth of information, it seems to be getting more and more expensive, and since MSE is free and good at what it does, I think the choice pretty much makes itself!
I was running AVG free, but after all the comments in this thread I've taken the plunge and installed MSE.
Same, I went two years using no av software, then got mcafee did a full scan and it found........NOTHING. Yea, viruses are out their but I look at a lot of the same sites everyday. I think modern windows and browser security is very good these days.
Avast on Windows Machines, Clam on my linux server (scanning Shared drives), but nothing on my Main Desktop (Ubuntu)
There, fixed for ya! If I was running XP (still do at work), yes I would install a firewall. My work laptop has one as part of the VPN software suite. I have used Zonealarm, Comodo and a number of other free firewalls with XP, all have their pros and cons but I am glad I don't have to use them any more.
I've had a couple of instances when Avast (free version) has warned me that certain sites contain code that's liable to hijack my pc and given the option to navigate away safely. So it's Avast (free) and Windows 7 Firewall for me. I also, occasionally, run MalwareBytes to test whether I've got anything malicious but the last few times it's reported 0 infections.
I find that the trouble with antivirus programs is like looking under your bed for monsters... A quick search comes up with nothing, but you never can be sure there really is nothing... LoL... Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence...
