Food & Drink Mouldy jam

Ok, now I'm even more worried - I have a doctors appointment tomorrow.

Also, it depends if it was good mould or evil mould. Evil mould gives you food poisoning and makes you sit on the toilet for days whilst your being sick into a bucket, whereas good mould gives you food poisoning then turns it's self into penicillin to cure the flu that your brother may have given you.

 

Apparently, one way of building your immune system for free is to go nose mining. As snot traps dust and germs, the golden nuggets act a bit like Yakult when they hit your intestine.

It's better than licking toads or eating dead-thing pie I guess.

i've been scraping the mold off jam and eating the rest for years..... and im fine.... oh wait a minute my leg fell off!

 

How the hell does food last this long in your houses?

Shopping comes in on wednesday, and by next tuesday I cannot find anything to eat. There is no chance that anything could get even remotely mouldy.

But is eating out of date eggs bad? I had some eggs that where a week out of date round my mates house, this was a few weeks ago and I'm completely fine.

 

Next Tuesday? It's about Thursday afternoon for me using that schedule.

Refrigerated eggs last an absolute age, usually two to three weeks after the date on the box. You can safely ignore the best-before date so long as when you open it you are not greeted with sulphur dioxide, and that the egg-white is not watery. If you crack the egg onto a plate you should get the yolk, a thick layer of egg-white then a slightly thinner layer of egg-white outside of it. You can just about see what i mean in this image. If you don't have that two-layer egg-white then do not eat, even if it doesn't smell.

 

I've never refrigerated an egg in my life, although I did grow up on a farm so my eggs used to be as fresh as they come, more recentlyI've happily eaten eggs months past the date - just do the spinny test; on a flat surface spin the egg, then tap the top quickly to stop it, let go and if it starts spinning again its fine. Inertia, separating the bad eggs for years don't think it works for jam.

 

So you don't keep your eggs in the fridge?

I've ate raw eggs / raw chicken / licked fingers when touching most meat etc i.e. beef/pork/chicken. I never get ill...

 

I wouldn't eat them raw if they were past the sell by date myself but cooked should be fine, if in doubt, stick them in a bowl of water to see if they float.

 

I always forget when I'm marinating meat that I shouldn't lick my fingers, I just don't like wasting the good tasting sauce. Eggs are the only food that really worry me about being out of date but my fears have been relaxed a little after reading those posts. I've got some near out-of-date eggs in the fridge I'm going to try the spinny thing out on weee I foresee scrambled eggs coming up!

 

Where are the eggs when you buy them in a supermarket?

 

We get them delivered from a farm, but yeah they are on the shelf.

Everyone I know keeps their eggs in the fridge.
