    Woops.

My ISP just shut down my webspace for the amount of traffic it got.

Time to look for another webhost me thinks. Shame I only have 1Mbit upload speed :)

    Modifying the IcyBox

I have modified the IcyBox to make it fit in a bit better, well I think it does. :D

    The tools and components:

    Fan extension lead:

    Temperature sensor extension lead:

Sata power to molex power adaptor:

    Dremel :dremel:

    Power adaptor fitted:

Extension cables fitted and routed through hole made in the back of the IcyBox. Yeah oops forgot to take a close up of the hole. :duh:

Closed and powered up. Em yeah I misplaced one of the top screws. Its in the house, somewhere.

Image from the rear. The remaining temperature probe connection is for the loop sensor.

Finally a test to see if it works.

    :D:thumb:

Only part not changed is the USB cable as I am not sure what to swap it out for. It goes from a single header row to a dual row connector and then spurs off to another dual row connector. :blah:

Hmm should probably look at changing the blue led to a red one too.

Next stage is draining of the loop and filling with Mayhem Pastel Light Red.:baby:

    Update

System almost fully drained and ready for filling:

First half litre to be dumped to ensure no mixing with the pure water. Yay for drain lines. :thumb:

    New coolant:

    Loop filled:

A new addition to the loop is a quick release for the radiator:

Now letting it run for an hour or so to make sure I havent introduced any new leaks. :D

Update complete and system back up and running. :thumb:

Some additional cooling to the memory banks.
    • 2 fans pulling air in through frmo the hard drives and 2 fans extracting at the rear.

Looks like it needs a bit of dusting too.

    Temps under water:
    • Idle temps ~ 18degC
    • Load temps ~ 27degC

    Old temps under air:
    • Idle temps ~ 28degC
    • Load temps ~ 55degC

Next modification is to rackmount it all in a cabinet, so need to look at how to rackmount the radiator.

Now we are at the peak of summer. Well its bloomin hot out there.

I'm happy with my system temps:

Ambient = loop temperature, fan speed = pump.

CPU3 = Temperature of metal block in loop

CPU1, CPU2 and CPU4 are inside another comp on top of the server.

The other fan speeds are the fans on the radiator.

Last year was around 70°C before I switched it off.

I think the room will be a tad hot thought.

    Hi Scorpuk

I was wondering whether you had this machine up and running and folding. If so, what PPD is it producing or is capable of? Can it manage a cool 1 million PPD? It has been suggested that it might be capable of this amount. When it is running at full bore, how much electricity does it use and more to the point, how much did it cost you to set it all up in the first place? I'd like to know as I'm thinking of trying to build a million PPD machine as a bit of fun, using GPU's rather than CPU's.

    Cheers.

    Pete
