    would you go for a 22inch 1680*1050 or 22inch 1920*1200 display?

primary use will be gaming and watchin movies,tv and perhaps hooking up ps3/xbox

Definitely the 1920 x 1200 if you can stretch to it, especially if you plan to hook up an xbox. It is a big price hike though.

    P.S. Can you get a 1920x1200 22"? I thought they were all 24"+?

It's really a matter of preference and budget. Personally, I'm getting a 22", mostly because there's some really good deals on 22 inchers right now. That, and I'm upgrading from a 19" so it'll be a pretty big difference regardless. If money is no concern, then by all means get a 24".

The only ones I see on the egg with that resolution are 24" and up.

EDIT: I'm not sure where you're located, but if you're in the states, here's a couple of pretty nice deals. I'll be getting this same Acer 22".

    22" - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009094

    24" - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009125

I'm not particularly partial to Acer, but they have some high quality monitors out at very good prices. My current monitor is a Samsung and I love it (no dead pixels after almost 5 years of constant use), but they really charge quite a bit for their name.

when it comes to gaming how do you think a change of res will scale? ie playing a game at 1680*1050 to get a better fps on a display with native 1920*1200
for some reason when i do this on my laptop the display just looks wrong.....think my laptop is over 2yrs old now so maybe thats a fault in older gen LCD panels?

I chose a 22" Samsung Pebble for my monitor, not too big, not too small, just right. :)

Depends on the rest of your system really, the 24" would obviously be preferable but there's likely to be a pretty big performance difference between that and a 22". A 360/PS3 would be lovely in 1080p though :thumb:

if you really want the FPS, get 22inch, and use 1440x900. my 22inch have that resolution and it's as clear as its native resolution, so Crysis is great.

if you have any top end graphics card 8800GTX/Ultra or 9800Gx2. you should get 24inch.

    22" 1680x1050 is more than enough for you. You're better off finding a quality 22" 1680x1050 monitor than a wonky 22" 1920x1200.

Reaching slightly further for the higher-resolution display produces diminishing returns, either in poor picture or no support for receiving even a high-definition signal via component video from your Xbox.

so do modern LCD's suffer when playing games on lower resolution ie 1680*1050 when native is 1920*1200 or is it down to the GPU stretching the res even though its the same aspect ratio?

As a rule, running a monitor at its native resolution gives optimal performance, but there are exceptions. It really comes down to the GPU/Monitor combination. I'm sure there's some less-than-name-brand displays out there that don't scale well below their native res, and cause some slight performance issues. If you get a 22" monitor worth it's salt then it should be just fine at its full native resolution.

    Go for 24". Seriously.

I recently upgraded from 19" to a 24" Yuraku display, and i am absolutely in love with it. The gaming experience is just so much better when you are running at high resolutions, you really get sucked into the game.

I agree that it depends on your GFX card though, but don't be too afraid. I'm using my old 8800 GTS 640 (that's the G80 core, much worse then the new GTS 512), and all games i play run perfectly smooth at full 1920x1200 resolution. Even Assassin's Creed with all features enabled is perfectly playable.

If you want to hook it up to a PS3/Xbox 360 there is even more reason to go for 24". You'll be sitting further from the screen, and you get the benefit of playing at full 1080i.

how does it look when you scale a game down to 1680*1050? ie crysis which will bring a quad gpu system to sub 10fps on may settings on 1920*1050

Actually i haven't tried that yet, good question.
I'll do it tonight with Assassin's Creed. I'll put it all in the tread i linked to in previous posts, plus a lot of pics.

On the 360 (using the VGA cable at least), you have to select the resolution in the dashboard. The frustrating thing is that there's not a 1680 x 1050 resolution (although allegedly this is one thing scheduled for the spring dashboard update) so you have to compromise. I think highest res you can run on a 22" is something like 1280 x 768 so obviously not native on a screen that's 1680x1050.

That's why I would suggest stretching to the 24" if you're using a 360, because you'll have a much greater resolution (1920x1080 vs 1280x768) and it'll be native to the monitor so should look better too. However, if they introduce a 1680x1050 resolution, this will all change :)

    * Obviously this doesn't necessarily apply to the PS3, I don't know about that.
