Just been reading that Nvidia will be releasing the GTX460 around the 1st june which will be their competitor to the ATI HD5850 price wise,
Also vendors will be allowed to use non reference PCB's with this one, No bench marks as yet though.

Problem is that the 5850 is as fast as the 470, and is £80 cheaper. So I'm not optimistic of a price/performance revolution.

Unless they happen to read a lot of Forums and take on board exactly what the punters are saying about their product!

Let's keep our fingers crossed eh.....

    Actually it's the GTX460 not the 470.

I thought the 5850's rival was the 285? Unless i'm wrong Fermi doesn't seem very useful.

Nah the 285's rival is the 5850, meaning that the 5850 is about 20-30% faster than the 285 and yet much cheaper, which is why the 2xx series was discontinued as nVidia couldn't compete. The 470 is roughly the same speed as the 5850 and the 480 is slightly faster than the 5870 in most games. Problem is that the 470 is the same price as the 5870 ><

Here they used to cost the same. I say used to because the 285 isn't really available anymore.

But as I said, the reason I am sceptical of the performance of the 460 is that the 470 performs the same as the 5850. It stands to reason that the 460 will be less powerful and cheaper.

    Hmm, a GTX285/275 in a cheaper form?

Sign me up that's about 2x as fast as my HD4850 and it'll be cheaper!

I don't really care if the GTX460 is as fast as the HD5850, just as long as it's a hair faster than the GTX275 I'm happy, we need to fill a gap the HD5830 has miserably done.

PhysX and the green logo is totally worth the price premium. It even combos with heat and power consumption.

Ok sarcasm aside which I am the original for, I was reading this from a reviewer today.

With the retail release BIOS a lot of the thermal concerns and noise concerns don't exist anymore.

I did FurMark, Warhead looping 10 loops on enthusiast settings, Stalker COP, Heaven, ATITool, and normal gaming and as usual the winner was Furmark (10 Minutes) at 85-86C with no noise issue at all.

Top end ATITool (10 minutes) 80c and if you ask me ATITool is more indicative of real life usage than FurMark which hammers the registers directly bypassing the GPU's hardware to drive up thermals.

Projected performance increase as the driver matures is 12-16% in non-tessellated games and non-ray tracing games. No telling how much increase on games that use those.

We were briefed on Metro 2033, it has almost every effect that GTX-4xx is designed for.

So unless the GTX460 is as fast as the 470 and cheaper....
Fermi's a trainwreck... I just hope NVIDIA can pick themselves up and try again next gen, (I'm glad the red corner won this round though)

Actually as long as the GTX460 out performs the HD4890/HD5830 and fills in the gap that was left with the EOLs of the GTX275 + GTX285, it'll sell relatively well.

But it will HAVE to come in at about £140-£180 as to not compete with the 5770 (where it will lose out on price) and the 5850 (where it will lose out on performance) and knowing NVIDIA there isn't a icicle's chance in Hades that it will cost anything near that

Nvidia will probably be constrained about where they can price Fermi and its derivatives anyway. TSMCs manufacturing issues have skewed prices for both companies so far as supply simply can't meet demand, which has kept prices artificially high.

This is a real shame for the consumer as we finally see the competition that has been lacking in the market for the last 6 months. On the bright side, both companies will have to focus on non-price competition so hopefully more features and better performance will become available from driver updates.

Maybe we should check the JPR stats and Steam Survey for Q2/Q3/Q4 2010 before we say ATi "won this round".

While they've been selling more DX11 cards to date, the real test of them "winning" will be after their products have to compete. ;)
