Other Re-Open Demotivational Petition

I sense much butthurt in this sector.

 

Not from me. I'm excited! I can't wait to unleash my awesomeness onto BT.

 

It was inevitable. The mods had to close it really. They kept warning you all and you kept ignoring them. Would have made themselves look stupid by keep dishing out the same tired warnings with no real consequences.

 

How many bans were actually given out from that thread?

I got 1, Krikkit got 1. Anyone else??


I say get very friendly with the banhammer and problems will be solved.

Was it really closed due to the old woman pic? LOL. The sheer levels of racism, misogyny , sexism, and hatred in that thread that go unpunished/noticed and the thread was closed for a picture of an old lady in a bikini?

Just re-open the thread, and rule it with a rod of iron.

pics only, no chatter
no porn
no overtly sexist or misogynistic images
No racism
No shock/gore/snuff images

The fact was, the funniest demotes contained none of the above anyway.

Apply these rules, and merely delete any postings that contravene them. Repeated offenders are perma-banned after being warned that they will be PERMAbanned.
Apply those rules, and the thread will straighten up and fly right.

I don't believe it attracted people for the wrong reasons, and even if it did, applying the above rules will either keep them in-line, or make them realise this is not /b/... in which case they'll move along to find a suitable place for their pubescent rantings in short order.

If a place isn't to someone's liking, they will leave of their own accord. Make the demote thread a policed, moderated place that takes no ****, and the /b/tards will shuffle off back to 4chan.

I'm not sorry, but that thread was bringing the collective decency of this place down, and I'm glad to see the back of it.

If I want stupid pictures, I know where google is.

If I want a decent community built by and around modders, I know where Bit-Tech is.

The fact that you find racism and misogyny funny, doesn't make it acceptable. I also think you may have misunderstood racism. What does your Christianity have to do with it? There were many posts on there who's intent was to ridicule people for their race only. That's racism. Laughing someone's religion is not racism. laughing at what people do and think is one thing... laughing at people for simply being a certain race is something else.

The "Balls.. they won't suck themselves" kind of childish crap was not funny... and it's sexist. Yet, the guy holding the poster at the feminist rally saying "Iron my shirt, bitch" is ironic and funny. There's a subtle difference. If you don't understand that, then tough. The fact is, if I had anything to do with it, the childish /b/tardedness would be banhammered.


Childish humour attracts children, and children tend to find the lowest common denominator funny.

Anyway.... it's this kind of butthurt whining that caused the problem.

If you wanna post and laugh at childish crap, go to 4chan.

the problem now is that everyone is all "please! We won't do it again!, we promise!" and for a while it will be like that, but after 6 months we will all be here (again) and wondering why the thread was closed (again), and blaming each other, and the mods, for the reasons why it was closed (again).

Truth is there are certain people on bit-tech who either who don't care about the rules, or who deliberately go against them. for this reason we can never have a demots thread, or any other thread that requires maturity, and common sense in order to keep it civilized and decent.

Work with the moderators, not against them

I don't agree. Outside of the Demotivational Thread I saw no difference whatsoever on the forum and 24(36?) hours after "the close" I still don't.

It seems to me like whoever didn't like the thread is taking things way out of proportions. It wasn't ruining the forum. Hell, the thread we're currently in is not even about the forums as a whole, it's about a single thread that turned sour for reasons that were stated a dozen times already.

The bit-tech forum is the best, period. It was the best prior to December 8th 2008, it was the best from that day to yesterday, and it will still be the best for years to come. Whether there is one thread with silly pictures or not is not going to change that.

I never said it was "ruining" anything, just lowering the collective decency. You may not have noticed it, but there were certainly a lot more (hopefully) joke posts that were bordering on being 'from' the de-motivational thread.

The thread encouraged a certain type of behaviour, as all threads like it do (Not just here, but everywhere), and that is what I believe lowers the collective decency of a forum.

 

You know something just occurred to me talladega - instead of spending an inordinate amount of time on /b/ 'collecting pictures' and waiting around here for a thread that may or may not re-open so you can upload them to Photobucket and share them with us, maybe you could use this as an opportunity to.......I don't know, do something else perhaps?

I stayed out of the demot thread & ignored all reported posts (apart from spam) because I hated it, it brought out the absolute worst of otherwise decent people and I couldn't trust myself not to close it and bin it. Other mods liked it, but tbh a lot of the crap dished out to the mods burned your bridges there a little bit I think...

Anyway, just to give you the other side a little. If only you could see the moderator log for that thread, it's HUGE. I think some of you may underestimate how much moderation it had and yet you all seem to agree it would need more if it were to ever exist again! It's not just the stuff that you can all see either, a lot of spammers would post there but as they now go to the moderation queue instead of being visible, you wouldn't know that.

I don't think having a petition thread will bring it back. If one pops up a while down the line, then I guess as long as it stays within the rules it'll be OK. But, for now, take a break! Just remember it was only a thread. You had fun while it lasted. Nothing lasts forever. If the only thing to bring joy into your life was a single thread on a forum it could be time to re-evaluate a few things...

This thread is now 5 pages of people arguing back and forth about whether or not the thread should come back, and if it does, what kind of images would be appropriate and what level of moderation would be required to maintain its quality.

I think that fact alone is enough reason to let it rest in peace. If even a small contingent of the Bit-tech community can't agree on something as simple as a Demot thread (nevermind the fact that it wasn't a Demot thread to begin with - it was just a 4Chan/boob repost thread), it's a good indication that it's probably not worth the hassle for the moderator team.

 

I browsed the thread vaguely regularly but to be perfectly honest the tone went from light hearted at the beginning to something a bit more unpleasant by the end. It got to the point where the endless reposts of the same thing, unpleasant images just for the sake of it and people behaving in a way that wouldn't have been tolerated in other threads just made me stop viewing it.

I appreciate the whole "if you don't want to see it don't click on the thread" thing, but IMO the attitude from the demot thread started to creep into others.

Bring it back/don't bring it back I don't particularly care, I'll just ignore it.
