hi guys, just after a bit of info on internet security etc. i am running bit defender anti virus and using windows firewall. is that enough? do i need a 3rd party firewall or is windows built in one ok? Also should i have anti malware and spyware software, i think that bitdefender sorts that out but i know alot of other people use seperate anti malware tools. Your advice would be appreciated
My security setup at the moment: Avast Antivirus Free for AV Spybot Search & Destroy for malware protection Common sense for clicking on stuff. That last point is the biggie for me. One of my Facebook mates posted on her wall about a free downloadable Super Mario remake. Now, while it seemed quite like her to do this sort of thing, and I promptly went to the Rapidshare page, I did ask her "Is this legit, or has something posted this up?" before opening the file. Antivirus wasn't picking it up, so I thought it was all clear. Turns out I was right to be suspicious, though - her computer was infected and rampaging across her Facebook profile. Her damage - 30 minutes of LiveCD scanning and deleting. Mine - 30 seconds of being wary. The best antivirus in the world is between your ears.
I use Windows essentials and firewall. don't really need anything else mainly cause I also follow MaverickWill's advice that you should think before you click. and theres the bonus of not having to worry about false positives from essentials deleting windows system files
MSE Windows firewall Malwarebytes avoid Limewire, Pr0n and links in emails guaranteeing increased girth.
Latest Windows + Microsoft Security Essential + a router, is all you need for a good protection. Windows Vista/7 firewall is no joke, and allows you to control inbounds and outbounds, by port, service, or programs.
Main PC. - Avast, Malwarebytes, Windows firewall Laptop. - Nothing (bar the built-in firewall in Fedora)
I really like netlimiter.. on top of it's firewall it let's you control the bandwidth per app or per computer.. using it in windows 7 now http://www.netlimiter.com/
+1, I don't have any 3rd party AV software installed and yet I've managed to keep my computer clean (or at least I haven't noticed any form of infection).
windows firewall is usually enough to do the job with a free antivirus, i used avira myself with malware antispyware aswell, you can avoid many dogdy links and files by not goin on dodgy sites or anything like that. if it anything looks suspicious just dnt click it.
ahh, but just because you havent noticed an infection, doesn't mean you dont have one. that's like saying i am going to have sex without a condom, i wont spread any diseases cos i haven't noticed i have one
Built in windows firewall should be suffient, plus if you have a router as well it should block most attacks.
