Heres where I got the wax: http://darentwax.com/

they have loads of different types.

Yeah that would awsome, I dont think you can mould thin pieces of alu though, using the lost wax process.

    Thanks p0Pe :thumb:

Mars lol, heres the stages I'm planning with the wax:

    1. Create a block of wax the correct size to mill on the CNC machine (which I've just done).

    2. Mill out the wax block so its the shape and size that the finished casting will be.

    3. I will then send the wax off to be Lost wax cast (Lost wax video was on the previous page of my log)

    4. Then when it comes back I'll have an accurate aluminium casting :)

The wax is only soft while its hot, once its cooled its as hard as plastic, its amazingly tough stuff.

    Thank Waynio, Yep, I'm 20 today :D

Wow, just wow. This is amazing, riekmaharg2. You must get all the ladies with such 1337 engineering skills :p

In all seriousness I only just came across this build log and having read all of it in one go am in a state of shock. Your work is really impressive.

Yeah, life is just too dam short :(. Hopefully someone will come up with an pill that stops humans from aging :)

Thanks Fractal :D. lol, if only I knew some ladies that were into engineering :p .

Unfortunately my mould didn't come out very well:

Its shrunk by a massive 25mm which is way more than I was expecting and its gone curved, so I'm gonna have to chop it up and try again. I'm now gonna melt two pans worth of wax and make the mould larger. I've also made a top for the mould this time so I can compress the wax down as it cools to stop it curving. Mores pics will be coming up later today.

pity, the joys of trying something new :)

Can you not just cut the original wax into a similar size with a saw, maybe even joining two pieces together if needed with hot wax? You could face it off then in your cnc...

Maybe I'm missing something obvious though

Good luck with the new mould.

Oh man do I feel your pain.

Problems are only challenges to overcome, right? :eyebrow: You'll get it figured out.

Yeah I tried joining two peices together but its really hard to get both ends molten as its quite a large area in order to get a decent join.

Yep, problems certainly make a build more interesting :D

This time round I used the fondu to melt the wax and then pour it into a glass bowl which then went into the oven while I melted the next batch of wax, and heres the result:

I then poured it all into my new extended mould:

I then placed a foil lined wood lid over the wax to hopefully keep it flat while it cools:

I then put some weight on it:

And just for fun heres the left overs out the bowl:

Hopefully this time I'll get a nice straight block.

I did some CNC wax projects when I was in high school. You can make some awesome stuff with just a 1 inch block. Can't wait to see the end result!

    Hm, this is awesome.

I think this is the first project I've ever seen that is going to use sand casting for moulding some parts. Very interesting! Do you have experience with that process, or is it "learning while crashing" from here on? ;)
