Hey guys, just a quickie really, is the thermal paste that comes with the Be Quiet Dark Rock Pro suitable for overclocking an i5-2500k? If not what would you suggest? Thank you in advance for advice and answers i know i will get!
I'm sure it would work fine, however if you plan on running it full tilt for any length of time, and notice the temps are too high (over 72.6 from memory) then Id suggest getting some Isopropyl Alcohol and cleaning it off and replacing with a thin line of Arctic Silver 5 or similar. It can drop 5 degrees off without too much hassle.
The dark rock pro comes with Shin-Etsu X-23-7762 which is pretty decent (insanely hard to spread though), I'm using it on mine and I get good temps. If you want to try an alternative I've never seen a better resource that this, the 2011 roundup is slowly being finished and covers pretty much all the main contenders. Arctic Silver 5 isn't the best paste nowadays, but I still use it every now and again as it's very easy to spread.
hehe yeah try the newer stuff.. I liked as5 a couple years back- but it takes too long to cure.. better ones out there with no cure time

use artic cooling mx-4 nowdays.. it supposed to last 8 years thermalright chill factor is pretty good stuff too.. least the newer batches- just used up the last of it on a playstation reflow mx-4 is kind of expensive- the downside
I use AS5 for CPU's and Ceremique for GPU's, but the temp differences between all of the major names are only a couple of degrees really.
To be honest getting the application right (thin even layer) probably matters more than the paste you choose, a couple of degrees here and there shouldn't make a massive difference. The only thing I've seen that is in another league entirely is the Indigo xtreme stuff, but it's pretty expensive and looks kind of scary to apply.
........ wow, indigo Xtreme is ridiculous. I would get some of that stuff if my cpu ran at anything higher than the 30degrees it currently sits at.
Agree with rv88uk, a proper application can mean a bigger difference than the choice of paste. Currently I use Arctic Silver MX-3, very good, non-conductive and easy to apply. Cheap too (if you know where to look).
