Just had one of these installed in my house. My housemate has invested in it to house all his, er, 'specialist material' should we say... http://www.synology.com/products/product.php?product_name=DS2411+ 36GB of drive space coming up at the princely sum of £1500...
Not really something I can "show" but I'm now junking my home server in favour of a 50/50 share of a Hetzner EX8 Dedi box running VMware ESXi, so I don't have to fork out for power and I can sub-let VMs to rake some of the cost back Look out for Atlantis appearing on the marketplace soon - not sure what I'm doing with the disks yet though, may buy a NAS
Certainly hope that's not right. I think you mean Terabytes: TB Oh stop it! You're putting ideas in my head Nice move though, I probably should do something like that for my own ESXi box, but it's too new and I like it too much to move on so soon
It's all up and running, now the task of sync'ing up just under 1TB of data over 20Mb/s - yay! Have 2.5TB to use though so Will be setting up a PXE/TFTP and Puppet VMs for rolling up VMs and making sure that everying config-wise is good - ultimately I'll be transferring over my freelance web design clients (currently with EvoHosting on a shared host - all will be hidden behind an IPFire gateway/router VM
A couple of quick snaps of my recently set up server. These pictures were taken before I got all the drives installed however, so now imagine it with five drives instead of three, and no DVD-drive. I need a better/more quiet cooler for it though as it is quite loud at the moment, and I'm having trouble deciding wether or not to watercool it or get a nice and quiet large air cooler. To further complicate matters I do have a DangerDen TDX cooler that will fit the motherboard, but I'm lacking a pump. We'll see. I expropriated the cabinet from our downstairs bathroom as I was fixing it up last year, and without informing the missus in advance I repurposed the cabinet for housing my server, router and switches.
Just a minor thread bump here; I was wondering what the current health state of peoples drives were? I have 5 drives in my server: 250gb 2.5" laptop drive from old laptop, used for OS: Power ons: 3560 Hours on: 12711 250gb 3.5" harddrive from an old computer, OS backup: Power ons: 2361 Hours on: 24407 1tb harddrive: Power ons: 442 Hours on: 7706 1tb hardrive: Power ons: 240 Hours on: 9869 2tb hardrive: Power ons: 165 Hours on: 5215 The two 1tb harddrives are soon to be replaced by two 2tb harddrives for MOAR STORAGE. Now have you guys got any harddrive in your server that can rival my 25000 hours of usage?
I've no way of doing that as they're a RAID6 array on a third party card... but they've been on for 24hrs a day for around 2.5years.
i just had a drive fail on me in my RAID1 on friday. i havnt had the chance to mess with it since it was a guildwars 2 beta weekend and all i just replaced one of those drives a few months ago because it had failed about a year after purchase. i dont remember which port it was so its unkown if its the replacement drive that has now failed.
I may hve found a summer project now I have a cupboard behind me that is basically full of old PC parts and serves little purpose.
