Hi, After 6.66 years and ending on a red and black screen I think my Radeon 7870 has died this evening; therefore I'm after a replacement. I'm not a massive PC gamer and the 7870 was just about capable when I chucked something at it on 1080p resolution (even if it wasn't on high etc). I realise the market is very different compared to my last purchase, however I probably don't need the latest tech and I figured £200 was enough for me. I'm after bang for buck and longevity (that matches medium specs). Had a quick look and I see RX580 at ~£160. Not sure if it is worth stretching to the 1660 and RX590 just above the 200 mark. Is there much of a gain?
No. The devil loves rounding coincidences. Interesting to see a couple of these are in budget Is there a firm date on that release? Not sure I can wait months or more than a few weeks. Feeding in terms of? I like a variety of games, from simple indie to strategy to fps, though I'm also a PS4 owner so I'm used to low-medium graphics and can use that for super intensive games that require better optimisation.
There isn't a lot of difference between a 580 and a 590, but there is a huge difference between a 7870 and a 580 - Heck, even a 4GB 570, which can be had for under £120 (with free games), would be a massive jump in 1080p performance. Then save the extra for when you're ready for a full system re-build?
One potential gotcha is power: your 7870 draws around 170W. The GTX 1660 sips a mere 120W so will be fine as a drop-in. The RX 590 however chugs down ~240W, so depending on what PSU you have you may need to add the cost of a new one to the cost of the GPU to get your actual outlay for an upgrade.
Yeah maybe I can go more basic than I think. Though that specific model doesn't have the right ports required A good point I hadn't considered, however I think I have enough headroom for another 70w. Will check though
