I put the foil behind the acrylic sheet, shiny side facing forwards - light from the LEDs at the edges is trapped and can't bleed out backwards. Just fix it in place with clear tape to begin with, to see if it works - it did for me, but my lighting setup was different to yours so your mileage may vary.

 

Oh I see what you mean. Yeah that wouldn't work here because the downward and upward pointing leds aren't actually edge-lighting. They sit behind the acrylic. I couldn't get enough coverage using edgelit with frosted acrylic. However I might try moving them to the edge and use foil.
