so I finally got my PNY 1080 ti I ordered from dell 2 months ago in and decided to put it into my budget rig with a i5 7500 and a 600watt psu and was able to get the clock to 2100 and the mem to 600 over. Question is did I get lucky with the card or can these go higher? I was using msi afterburn, and maxing at 84c on air.
It's quite normal, they can start throttling due to temp and TDP limit when the card is underload, one you can sort with water or high fan speeds, the other you can use custom BIOS to up TDP but its fast enough where it is.
I'm pretty sure Nvidia list 91c as the max core temp - so I would say you're fine at 84c. The question is more whether or not you NEED to clock higher. Are you playing at 4K and hovering just around your ideal playable FPS? Or still on a 1080p monitor and running everything at 250+FPS?
If you're hitting 84ºC then you're probably hitting the max temperature and causing the card to throttle, at least according to Anandtech. EDIT: So having done some more reading it seems Pascal throttles to a small extent (-13Mhz per 10ºC rise) all the way up to 83-84ºC when it starts to become more aggressive (-100Mhz per 10ºC) all the way up to its 105ºC ceiling.
Run something like a 3dmark timespy stress test and you will see how well it holds clocks, you’ll get a better idea of your systems clock stability plus nice graphs of clocks vs temps over a greater period than afterburner
If you want to sustain clocks like that you need water, IMO. Air just doesn't cut it on big Pascal. FWIW I run my Titan XP at 2100 but I have it on a dual rad custom loop.
I’m doing a wa I currently waiting on my water blocks and the rest of my new hardware so I can water cool it. I ran heaven back to back for around an hour or so. Do u guys recommended another benchmark to use like furmark?
Heaven will do. Furmark is just a power virus. I really wouldn't recommend it. If it is stable in Heaven/Valley you should be G2G.
Depends on the cooler, my Asus Strix does just fine on air (mind you that is in a very well ventilated case), there are also some other cards like Zotac Amp Extreme Spectre that also work just fine. Of course if you want a 1KG+ triple slot brick hanging from your card is another topic, but the point is air cooling can work all the way up to the artificial OC limits imposed by Nvidia. But yes, when it comes to the reference cooler (or reference cooler copies like on the MSI Aero OC) you'll be thermally limited.
I have a Zotac AMP! Extreme 1080Ti which self boost to 2050MHz, and sits there under 68C with a quiet fan profile.
That’s the same with my 1080. I know it’s not quite a big Pascal, but it barely touches into the 60s with the lowest fan speed, judged by the curve that ASUS put on the card. On an 80% power target and 55% fan speed, it sits around 54 to 57 whilst mining. That’s very respectable if you ask me.
