I have a project due on Friday and it's all on my computer. :|

Today I woke up and tried to turn on my computer, it powered up for about 5 seconds and then shut itself down. Now whenever I hit the power button nothing happens. The power supply is an Antec SL350 350w. The ethernet light on my motherboard and also the power LED on the surface of my motherboard (not the one on the front of the case) is lit, meaning that there is power getting to it. The motherboard is a ASUS A7N8X-X, I'm thinking that might be fried since there is power coming from the power supply?

    please help, thanks

You saved a back-up on removable storage right?

The easiest and quickest fix I can think of is to ask a friend to let you put your HDD in their PC to get the files you need and to make back-ups.

Trouble-shooting PCs takes time and care. You need to be methodical in narrowing down what went bad and why.

This may seem like a stupid suggestion, but try clearing the CMOS on your motherboard with the Clear-CMOS jumper, then try to boot again.

    already tried

originally i thought it was the power supply, but that is delivering power... could it be my power switch on the front of the case that is not working maybe?

Has it had any physical bumps? +
I had this, where a lost screw had dislodged itself and fallen between mobo and tray, occasionally shorting it so the PSU cut out. Intermittent, and hard to find!

Pull the PSU and see if it boots on its own. If it doesn't then its a PSU issue. If it does, check for shorts etc on the mobo.

Not quite. To make a PSU switch on without a mobo connected, you have to connect the green wire on the 20way plug to any of the black ones. A bent paperclip should do the trick.

take the board out of the case, plug it in minimal, i.e. just graphics, PSU and mobo, mount place it on a device that is not conductive of electricity, use a screwdriver to short the two pins which the Power switch normally connects to.

Ask for an extension on your work, I know my uni doesnt accept comp trouble as excuse so you may need to be abit more inventive ie. say someone died. Then start your work again, keep backups! and try and fix your comp after you have done the project and handed it in. GL whatever you do anyway :)

A lot of places don't accept computer troubles as an excuse for extensions, reason being is that common sense means you always make a backup on another storage medium.

If you really the work, do as suggested earlier and plug the drive into another computer, set it as slave and retrieve the files if there are no added security on it.

I feel obliged to point out that this is ethically and morally wrong in most people's views (including mine) and can get you in more trouble than it's worth.
