The copy of XP you are using has to be exactly the same as the license.

I.e. Home SP1 CD will not work with a Home SP2 License

Well, it doesn't care about service packs.... but you can't swap an OEM install for a Home install disc. And, AFAIK, a branded OEM disc can't be swapped for a generic OEM key, or vice-versa (ie, a legally purchased OEM copy from Newegg won't work with the disc from the IBM OEM version).

    I've installed XP SP1 using a pre-SP1 COA before.

I haven't had to reinstall recently, but it seems that each time I do nowadays I end up having to ring M$ for a confirmation code; no problem there.

I've read about folks being told that their license has expired and that they'd need to buy a new one - there'd be quite a row if one of M$'s automatons tried telling me that!
