Ok guys got my finger on the button. Do you think a Dell U2711 for £577 inc del is a good buy? Primary use is gaming. If the answer is go for it then which graphics card would you suggest at that resolution? Ati 6970 or Nvidia GTX570 or GTX580. Any thoughts much appreciated.
looks like a bargain for what it can offer, if you where to go for it i'd make sure you had the best graphics card to go with it. I'd say if tesselation is important to you for now or the future then the 580 is the way to go, If you can't quite stretch to that and your PSU/MB can handle it then a 570 should play todays games quite happily and you could SLI it in the future.
A Dell U2711 @ £577 is indeed a pretty good deal, you should go for it if you have the money. A GTX 580 would be necessary to absolutely max the graphics settings at 2560x1440 resolution. If you would settle for just high settings a ATI 6970 would do too and it gives better bang for your buck.
The dell U2711 is a fantastic monitor and is IPS, it's panel's quality is better than standard TN panels found on normal monitors. A resolution of 2560x1440 would be very demanding for some games such as Metro 2033 and Napoleon:total war and on high settings all of those cards would struggle, but for the majority a 570 or 5970 would suffice. If you can afford its a good buy, if not then get something cheaper.
Its a brilliant screen and much less than what I paid for one. Loads of connections great resolutions
Good value =/= Low price. What is more "value"; a generic 23 TN incher that goes for £230 or the Dell U2711 for £577. Remember the U2711 for that amount is £120 more than what the U2410 goes for. I fell the term Value is thrown around as "ZOMG BUY 32 INCH TV FOR 10 PENCE!"!11!!" (not saying a 32 inch would be poor value at that price though ).
Given its feature-set, quality and typical price, I'd definitely say it's great value! As mentioned above, make sure your computer can actually push those pixels when gaming
Buy the best you can afford. If you can get the GTX 580 then it'll help you make the most out of that screen as others have said.

Go for it. I caved in last week and bought it too... it's a superb monitor and if the sale is still on, a good £200 cheaper than anywhere else.

Yeh im considering the HD6970 due to the price. The GTX580 is nice but getting one for a reasonable price (due to lack of stock) is a put off. Especially when 28nm cards are due next year so if a 6970 can cope id be happy.
Got till 10/01/2011 to decide on the graphics card as thats when it comes yay Also thats pretty close to the rumoured sandybridge launch so good timing.
You may be pleasantly surprised by the delivery date. Dell said it could take until January (like you) but then it arrived the next day I've got mine powered by a water-cooled GTX 480, as for gaming and folding it was the best card at the time (I ditched my water-cooled HD 5970 as the drivers are a complete joke).
Well you've just brought a premium visual monitor that deserves to be driven by a premium GPU... Go for the GTX 580 and game like the clappers! Just make sure you post up some pictures when you get these items.
From my experience with my 30" over the last few years, you don't need the absolute top of the line graphics card to power a decent size screen. My old X1800XT 512MB was plenty good for the majority of the games that I played, and a single 5870 worked 'maxed out' with very acceptable framerates in most games. I did eventually go for twin 5870's mainly for the extra little bump in AA, though it's completely unnecessary now that I have experienced it (the image is incredible at such a high pixel density that it doesn't really need AA IMO... The 27" actually has better pixel density as well). That being said, I DID just buy a GTX 580 to replace both of my 5870's... Going back to one card for those windowed games I love to run multiple copies of *cough*EVE*cough*, without sacrificing much in the way of performance in the fullscreen games I play.
Hehe James was right. Day after i ordered it i got an email bringing the delivery forward to 30th DEC Still keeping an eye out for the graphics card to partner it. GTX 580 is ahead atm.
