Yeah I was thinking about this and who is it exactly. I am going to make the case for Soundgarden because they started out so much early then most in like 83-84. But Close of Course Nirvana then Stone Temple Pilots. Suprising I do not like too much Pearl Jam. Nothing really that great a little over rated!

Alice in Chains. They're the only grunge band I really listen to.

i think pearl jam are fantastic. have been going down hill a bit recently though (wasnt a fan of their last 2 albums) but theyve created enough gold to go down as one of the greats. AiC are also brilliant but i rate them mostly for their acoustic stuff. Their unplugged is one of my favourite albums ever.

soundgarden are okk but im not a big fan, same for nirvana.

madseason is pretty great, and temple of the dog are ok too but theser arew sideporjects of the main grunge bands.

but overall, pearl jam gets my vote.

I don't really know what grunge is, never even heard of that genre of music...

anyway from the above I think nirvanna is the best, pearl jam aint bad too.

Nirvana are the original grunge band, Mark Arm from Mudhoney made the genre up to name the type of music that Nirvana played, i prefer Creed and that style of thing but still love Nirvana.

Considering Nirvana were influenced by earlier acts like Soundgarden and Mudhoney I'd consider them the original grunge bands, regardless of who first coined the term and when.

Either way, I find grunge to be an utterly repellant genre and can only stomach a few tracks from the likes of Soundgarden and Pearl Jam.

Seeing as this era was right at my teen music stage.. I never understood why people classed STP as grunge, they never fit the mould for me. Pearl Jam were great up to a point where they disappeared up their own arses and just started releasing shite.

At the end of the day there's only a few bands which you could fit into it adequately.. what; Soundgarden, PJ, Mudhoney, Nirvana, AiC, L7, Silverchair.

Still, I stick by what I said.. Alice In Chains :D

K, I agree with what you said (as Soundgarden predated Nirvana by a long time) but more importantly I think we're hitting the crux of our musical Nemesis issue.. as this music was what I grew up on and you obviously hate it as much as I hate yours. :D

"Two guys, Two Decades... brought up on opposite sides of the tracks must now work together to save the future of Music."

lol. Actually, grunge was the first music I properly got into when I started hanging out with a friend who had an older brother. I was only about 12 but he got me listening to Nirvana and Pearl Jam etc. 'Ten' was my first album I think.

I don't think the music has aged well at all though. But hey.
