Case Mod - In Progress BLING (DK's spray job)...06/10/11 ...FINISHED....

Right then kiddies I'm off with another one, going to just a quicky as there's minimal modding and a lot of spraying.

So first up, this is not my case. It belongs to forum member DK63 (tony). When he approached me about spraying a case for him and then said he'd like a spray job similar to Bulldogs box I jumped at the chance to do it and with that sort of paint, you can see why I choose the project name "BLING".

So with out further ado lets get on with it.

Now I'm going to do this a bit arse up, because me being me I jumped straight in with out getting the camera out. I'll explain exactly what I'm up to but have to back track a bit later on with pics when I get on to the second colour.

1st I pulled the case apart and started on the front panel. A simple rub down with a scotch bright pad and them clean it up with some white spirit on a rag and it's ready for painting.







Next up is the bit with out the first stage pic...Oops

as before I rubbed the chassis down with a scotch bright pad and then applied 2 coats of standard Grey primer, once that was dried nicely I applied 3 lights coats of satin black paint....












The next stage is the gold flake. the way I do it is to spray the case with a light coat of lacquer and before it dries give it a light dusting with the gold flake. The reason I do it this way is that it helps the flake stick to the case much, much better than spraying on to dried paint .....

















While I was at it today I also sprayed the fan holding thingy for the front and the PCIE slot covers...







So thats it for today, tomorrow I'll be spraying some more bits and cutting the side panel up for the new window and I promiose I'll do step by step pics this time......Maybe lol

Thanks a lot Angel, but this ones just about the paint, it will be nice though, thats for sure. I have got a little some thing of my own at the planning stage, but thats for another time.

A basic paint job would only take about 2 days to do and that includes reassembly of the case. In summer with the long days maybe it could be done in a single day.
But I like to take a bit of time and turn out a nice job.

 

I've started to paint the case, it's a green metallic pearl with the gold flake on top..BUT...I have a dilema. I've sprayed one panel and the front and the top of the case, now here's the problem. Do I go for the light base or the dark base as it changes the colour quite a bit, my personal preference is to go with the dark base, but ultimately it's going to be up to Tony..

I'll leave you with some pics to look at and I'll throw a poll up to see what every one thinks.

The first few pics will be the light base and the second batch will be the dark base and at the end I'll have the 2 together for a better comparison....

Popular opinion is go with the dark base. However, it seems to me the light base shows up the gold flake better? Difficult to tell from pictures though.

 

I agree! I say go with light base!

 

Mhhh i would go for the dark base but that is just my taste

I think the answer is some where in between both. As it's a pearl finish if I put more on the dar base it will lighten up slightly, then put a heavier coat of flakes on it...Sorted.

I find that no matter how good the pics are, its always hard to see what metal flake looks like unless your there yourself looking at it.

I would ask you for a video, but i know its prob a hasstle to mess about like that?.

+1 i think for the darker base.

I cant spray like you, but my mate is a sprayer at a garage, and when i go for metal flake finishes, we get the colour samples out, then sprinkle the flakes on the card to try get idea of looks.

I think you do a good job with colours and which flake to use.

I always think that white with silver flake would look good, with the right amount of sunlight,but never tried it.

P.S. We put the flakes in with the laquer which is a nicw way of doing it.

He did tell me off once though as he had to spray a truck for an exhibtion and called me over to show me a perfect black truck, telling me to look closer.

Then i spotted it, a single flake shining away.

Not my problem he didnt clean the spray gun out thouroughly.
