Ok, i've just upgraded to an Athlon x2 4400 from a 64 3000+. All boots up fine etc, device manager lists 2 processors which i think is correct? However task manager only shows a cpu usage graph for 1 core and I believe it should show 2 graphs for 2 cores.

Was wondering if someone can point me in the right direction with this as this is my first dual core setup. Also just to clarify i did not do a fresh windows install for the upgrade nor do I want to except in an absolute last resort :p

I believe you will have to do a reinstall in order to see both cores usage in task manager. I'm not sure if it will be using both cores. Try running some benchmarking programs to find out.

    re dual core not working

Anator, you need to upgrade the HAL for your PC in device manager from the uniprocessor HAL to the multiprocessor HAL

if you download the amd cpu monitor off their site it'll show if both cores are being utilised by windows, and while your there you can get the drivers

Thanks for the replies everyone, unfortunately I haven't made much progress as yet.
I downloaded the AMD power monitor which stated that multi-core suppourt is not enabled. I also downloaded&installed the dual core drivers but this has made no difference.

Byteman, what exactly do you mean by HAL drivers?

HAL drivers are the CPU ones I believe.

Are you using the mobo in your sig?

EDIT: Make sure you're on the latest BIOS

Anator, the HAL is the hardware abstraction layer, which sits between the H/W and the Kernel. You can change it it in device manager, expand computer under device manager, and it will probably show ACPI UNIPROCESSOR PC, upgrade this driver to ACPI MULTIPROCESSOR PC, then instal the AMD Athlon 64 Processor driver from the AMD web site, for best cooling/performance.

I thought that's what you meant. Already checked that - currently got ACPI PC installed but the only other option to install is Standard PC.

You need to repair-install. I went from a 4000+ to an Opty 165, and couldn't get the dual cores to show up until I repair installed my system.

Anator, when you attempt to change the driver, don't let the computer try and auto detect the driver. Select install from a list or specific location (advanced), then, don't search, I will choose the driver to install, you should then be able to choose the ACPI multiprocessor driver from the list. :duh:

Anyone got any other thoughts? I feel my worst fears are coming true and I will have to attempt a repair without my cd key :(

That is already selected, but windows itself isn't utilising both cores :duh:

You should always keep your authentic CD key on the machine case.
