How many devices can a usb port recognize at one time? Here is what I am looking to do, I have a laptop it only has 3 USB ports. At the moment I am out of laptop hard drives so I want to mod one usb port and make it 2 USB ports so that I can use a mouse and a memory card for the OS. If i solder from the back of the port on the lap top and add another port in with the computer recognize this as 2 separate devices if I have 2 things plugged in? A picture for reference.

Below I want to solder these 2 ports together, will the computer recognize these as 1 or 2 ports if I have 2 devices plugged in?

NO. This will not work. What you need to do is pull the lines from the original port into a small USB hub, then have the 'original' port and the new port come off that..

Look at old EEEPC 701 hacks for inspiration..
