I have a Lexar JumpDrive Secure and I would like to paint it because the paint has already worn off a lot and it looks old. I need paint that will not wear off easily because it is in my pocket a lot. I also am not quite sure of how I would paint it, I imagine sand it a lot and then put a couple of coats on. The black part is ruber-type and I would not be painting that. Thanks in advance.
Go to your local auto parts store and get some vynal dye. It seaps into the plastic and dyes not only the top layer but sinks down and dyes under the plastic. Very hard to wear this stuff off, its made for car seats and dashboards.
Also, do I need to sand it for vinyl dye? If so, what grit? \ Also, is there a difference between vinyl dye and vinyl paint? Thanks
or just go to your local walmart and pick up a can on krylon fusion in a spray can about 4 bucks. you might wanna lightly sand it to make the paint adhere better use a light grit just to get any grime and old paint off, but don't put deep gouges in it don't forget to mask off the rubber parts before hand....
Thanks! does krylon fusion work the same way as in it soaks into the plastic? with my thumb drive on my key chain, it gets a lot of scratches.... I cannot seem to locate krylon fusion on walmart.com...should it be there?
Yeah krylon fusion is really a joke. It doesnt last longer than anyother pain to plastic, you need they vynal dye. I got my from an Advanced Auto parts in a small town but I have seen it at Napa and other auto stores. Good luck
Okay thanks, there are both Advanced Auto Parts and Advance Auto Parts near me hehe....the only 2 auto stores i can think of, about how much should it cost me to get enough to paint a thumb drive?
You would only need one can, and you would have alot left over. My can cost like $3.88 USD so it shouldnt be anymore than $5.00 . Hope this helped.
I painted one of my USB drives, I went the old fashion way. I taped up what I didn't want painted and primed and painted. Make sure you put on a clear cote. As you can see I didn't use the fusion plastic paint. My paint job is still lasting and my USB drive spends allot of time with my keys in my pocket. The only reason I really painted it with normal car paint is because I had some left over from one of my projects. I strongly recommend going with the Fusion plastic paint though.
I would still say go with they dye beacause there is no chance of it wearing off. And you dont need to clear coat. The Krylon Fusion is really a joke. It doesnt "chemically bond" with the plastic like the comercial says.
i need to get some vinyl dye for my usb key. the company only made them in purple (purple!!!) so i need to change its colour. the kids at school would point and laugh*, theyd all say " look at the kid with a purple usb stick!" so i need to change it. *PS. that didnt actually happen.
