You can see my current system in my sig. I want to upgrade it this summer with a new motherboard, cpu, memory, video card, PSU, HDD(SATA) and maybe a new case Now i want to get an AMD 64 cpu(dual core) with the new AM2 socket and im not sure what motherboard i should choose. What would you suggest for a motherboard? Also if you want to suggest a CPU, memory, video card, etc go right ahead Also is DDR2 avalible on these motherboards yet? This system will be for gaming/workstation i want it to be pretty powerful but dont want to spend over 1k if thats possible Thanks, Zach
Maybe he didn't understand your question or you didn't understand his answer. To sum up: yes, AM2 motherboards use DDR2. Yes, plenty of DDR2 is available. As for suggestions for your system, hit up Newegg.com and read reviews. A 1k budget is pushing it for a complete new system I'd think but it is possible. personally, I'd not bother with AM2 yet. Go for a Pentium D 805 and wait for conroe.
Normally I'd be an AMD guy as well. My current home rig is a XP2500+. The cheapest AM2 X2 is the 4200+ 2.2GHz @ $370 + shipping. a decent motherboard, the ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe is about $150 + shipping You don't say how much RAM you want, but a good 1GB kit is G.Skill @ $130 so a base system cost of $650 and none of this is excessive. You could get away with one stick of Ram for a bit less or you could find a cheaper ECS motherboard perhaps. True, it would thrash either of our current systems, but the upcoming Intel offerings seem to be getting much better reviews for price/performance. just my 2 cents, but Conroe looks to be taking the crown away from AMD for performance, price, and overclockability. AMD had better have an answer for this Intel barrage before x-mas.
AM2 is simply AMD64 with DDR2. Right now It's still the best solution. The problem is wether or not you trust conroe beeing better or not. Both the Prescott and the newer model (not sure what it's called) havent been able to beet it.
People on other forums said not to get AM2 and just get a 939 board because DDR2 and AM2 dont always play nice together.
