personally im worried about the smaller gaming companies, being at e3 gave the small independent developers the chance to show off their games to the worlds gaming media and generate interest... and its quite often that the quality and attention to detail of small developers games are above the standard of the larger developers, who often just focus on shiny graphics and large sales

Here's recent posting from ESA... basically E3 will shrink, no more Big Trade Shows... just press events, and small meetings.

So what's going to replace it in the eyes of the big boys? If we concede for the moment that they're right and it wasn't generating enough hype, er, press coverage, what are they going to do now to generate hype? I'm not sure what the cost of multi-page ads in magazines that no one ever looks at is, but I bet you can't buy too many for them for what your E3 booth cost.

E3 was also one of several key contacts between companies and consumers, kinda like parents evening - tell them what you think and what you expect of them in the future. Does the industry really need to remove itself further from consumers?

Unless this is more bit tech spin on the article
E3 is for new and upcoming tech (as far as i can tell) the 360 had allready been out for ages by E3 2006

No bit-tech spin :) From my understanding and that of others in the industry, MS is now happy to participate in the NEW, EVOLVED (and cheaper) "e3 media event." Basically, as far as I can discern, it's because this last E3 didn't go their way. I bet the conversation went a little like this:

MS/Sony - "We don't feel this year's event gave us the coverage we wanted. It was expensive, and Nintendo got all the press. We're not releasing new consoles next year, so we have little reason to attend again. Thanks for all the fish."
ESA- "WHAT? That will shut down the show!"
MS/Sony - "That's your problem. Oh, and Nintendo's, cause now the press can't throw laurel wreaths at the feet of the Wii while we get ignored."
ESA - "But you're the ones who didn't bring anything to the show..."
MS/Sony - "That didn't stop you from charging us any less for our spot."
ESA - "was it supposed to? What if we change the event...make it smaller so people HAVE to come see you guys more."
Sony - "Eh, still costs money"
MS - "Throw in way cheaper floor space and let us do everything by invite only, and maybe we'll bite."
ESA - "Fine! We'll call it a more intimate press affair."
MS - "Yeah, we can deal with that."
    Sony - "..."
