I have been using the same network set up for two years now and the other day i reset my router because of an internet connection problem. Now, both of my computers can get online but cannot see each other on the network. Any ideas?
I should also say that the only time i can get into my router config by using 192.168.2.1 is when I don't have an broadband connection.

what happens if you ping them from each other?
can they both get to the router?

When you say 'can't see each other' what exactly do you mean?
Are you trying to ping, access mapped network shares, what?

Also, what's involved with the entire setup?
Is it only these two PCs attached to the DSL router?
Or is there a seperate modem attached to a router then to a switch with two machines?
    Is there any wireless PCs?

Have you checked that the PCs have IP addresses in the same range?
And that they're both recieving IPs from the same router?

    You can ping them?
ie, you can ping one PC from the other and vice versa?

Then it sounds like they're networked fine.

What do you want to do with them?
You want to share files etc between them or something?

What option are you selecting for both when running the network setup wizard? I.e. are you choosing on the first page 'other', then 'connect through a hub' ? Then whizz through it, ignoring disconnected connections, both workgroups the same, yadda yadda, allow file and print sharing, then choose 'I will configure it myself' on the last bit. You should then be able to view at least the shared folder on each.

Go to start>run, type cmd, type ipconfig - each should be getting a similiar ip address, i.e. on mine I get 192.168.1.3 and 192.168.1.4, with the router being 192.168.1.1 (and wireless ethernet bridge being 192.168.1.2).

I apologise if the above sounds contrite, but I don't know what you know or don't know with regards to setting up a standard home network. Anyway, hth!

Why does everyone use the Wizard?? go to control panel, go to networking -> do your self.. it's not exactly complex, and will, in the long run, give you a far better understanding of any issue that you have.

i would just specify each one to have an ip address...

set one to have 192.168.x.100 and the other to have 192.168.x.101 x being whatever the address of your router is.

    make the netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway = router ip address (usually 192.186.0.1 or 192.168.1.1)
    dns = router address

the wizard usually solves it, but since it does not, this will set it up manually.

i have had this happen a lot of times, and it is very frustrating

how are you trying to access the share? is it by the explorer or by the run box? Also, is it by IP or by computer name.

Lastly, what happens what you nslookup a name rather than an ip, does it return the right ip?

    WTF?

Sounds like you have the cable modem attached to the LAN ports on the router instead of the WAN port?
