I win. Mine could fit six couples at once in the back.

Unfortunately, being a smelly, rusty red van, it's hardly a chick magnet.

all Im saying is that it should be getting way higher mpg, to me it sounds like the engine is tuned badly.

    @Hazardous

Whats the rpm range between 60-80mph? Id imagine in the 3500-4500 rpm range.

Hmmmm, the most I've fit was five couples, three people in front, four in middle, three in back.

The thing is finnicky as hell on gas too. The gauge is way off (I've put 50 miles on it and had it show a full tank, and I've had it run out of the gas with the gauge on a quarter tank. If you turn the car or accelerate, the gauge can swing as much as a quarter tank in each direction).

I've clocked it with as low as 9 mpg in very cold short distance driving, and as high as 22 or so mpg highway cruising.

    Aye... I believe it's around about that  IIRC... it's 3800rpm @ 70mph?

I have to admit... I haven't had the engine "tuned" since I bought the car some 5 years ago... but I do have it serviced regularly (it had a cam belt service last summer... £ouch!!).

But 18mpg is the maximum I could get out of 'er? That's the maximum "unladen" mpg figure... according to the users manual anyway :eeek:

the 4.3L v6 in the van has a 8:1 compression ratio from factory. It has 50k on it so it may have dropped slightly due to led foot and this is a pushrod engine.

I believe his problem is transmission gearing or the engine does not make any usable torque below 2500rpm.

I think the engine needs a ecu remapping to bring torque to lower rpm.

    1. It is an AWD car.

    2. I can't say as I've experienced any problems with torque below 2500rpm?
She pulls just fine (in my opinion)... from very low speeds/revs?

That said... I just might have it remapped and tuned anyway.
Both my sons are qualified mechanics, with the younger of the two still working in the industry.
Being a bit of a boy-racer... he's very keen on getting the best out of his own cars, and for that reason, I'm quite sure he has plenty of good 'contacts' outwith his work, who specialise that sorta thing :hip:

She's actually due an MOT and a service at the end of this month anyway, so I may just go the whole hog, and get it remapped/tuned at the same time

It's the 1.4 100bhp engine. It was some special offer they were doing, came with the alloys, the sporty front grill, opening rear windows, radio controls on the steering wheel, and a DAB radio with an SD card reader in. Quite a good deal :)
Leeum, I'm not actually sure on the insurance, as my dad sorted it out and payed for it. I'll ask him tomorrow :)

    Interior Styling:

    Electric Windows

    Comments:

Picked this car up a few days ago, the HPI report says it was imported into this country a fair few years ago and came in a lovely shade of grey, over the years i was eventually hammerited by the 4th owner who was going about restoring the shell. The former owner stripped it back to bare metal, sorted out all the rust on the car. Audi smoothed door handles were next follower by a respray in Audi Rot Pearl. Many gti enthusiasts were shocked as its not a factory colour but its still from the VAG group and looks damn sexy. Had a 250 mile drive home with her and she didnt miss a beat, but we narrowly avoided a fox that ran into the road that would have been the end of me, the car and the fox. Thankfully i got home in one piece.

    Plans:

Replace Scirocco Leathers with bucket seats
    Wire up electric window switches
    Wire up sunroof switches/motor
Fix indicator relay - buzzes at random times
Replace steering wheel with a 280 or 300mm affair
    Fit 280mm brakes
Get switches and vents from an Audi TT dash, i already have a full dash cut to size in the house.
    Fit mirrors
    Full Stainless exhaust
Sort drivers door as it is sagging slightly
My Stroseks may see this car but i imagine 16 x 7s will be a bit too big for the golf

    And the grand master plan - 1.8 G60 or 1.3 G40 conversion.
